Does an LOA deadline affect waiver timeline?

Hello all! I am currently sitting on an LOA and a nomination, but am waiting for a waiver for a pretty minor food allergy. I’ve already turned all the AMI’s in but I just noticed that my LOA expires on January 8th if everything is not complete. Does this at all change the speed at which I could receive a waiver or do I just have to hope for the best? What happens if the deadline is passed and I still don’t have a decision?

The LOA is likely conditional on full medical clearance. You would be advised to sign and accept the LOA and then continue to wait on the medical waiver.

There is nothing to sign. It is just a letter saying “You are guaranteed an offer of appointment” if I complete all the tasks.

Never hurts to give Admissions a call. They very well could be fluid with that 8 JAN deadline. Since you did your part, they might understand that that you are simply waiting on the fine Americans at DoDMERB to evaluate your AMIs and make a final determination. I am speculating, but I doubt there is a flag on any record at DoDMERB regarding LOAs. DoDMERB reviews thousands of records and is strictly there to determine medical suitability for commissioning. LOAs are admissions functions. They are more there to "carrot and stick" applicants they especially like since those applicants are most likely applying to other good schools. However, waiver adjudications are made by the commissioning source (i.e. USNA). This is where you might probably get flagged an an LOA candidate.

Again, Admissions can give you the honest answers. Even if they won't extend the deadline, they can probably provide a way forward for your appointment. They obviously want you to come, they are probably willing to work with you to make that a reality.

This is the first that I have heard of an LOA carrying a deadline, as the timing of the most common conditions (medical and nomination) are largely outside of your control. Couldn't hurt to reach out to your Admissions Officer, but as a practical matter -- the LOA means that USNA want's you, and would probably waive any deadline IF they can grant a waiver of the medical issue.
