My son is a freshman in a very competitive high school with a graduation class that will be around 1300 students.
He made the JV soccer team this year. He loves club soccer, but I can't afford the $6000 a year that it cost by the time I pay for, club fees, uniforms, tournaments, and travel. He has played club since he was very young. As he is getting older the cost keeps going up.
Do you think playing club sports will help him to get a nomination? He would love to play for the Academy, but without club soccer I am sure that will be out. High school competition is not at the same level. I have not told him yet, because he is committed until the end of June. Gives me a little time to figure it out.

Varsity High School soccer will actually be better as far as the application goes. If he can get to be captain, even better.
If he wants to play on the IC team HS is no good. He absolutely needs a very high level of club soccer and preferably Developmental Academy Soccer. The IC soccer program is very competitive.
My son (class of 2020) played both club and HS. Hope that helps.

The problem with playing on the FC Dallas Developmental Academy team is he would not be able to play high school sports.

I am aware. We are from the same area. If you would like more specific info feel free to DM me and I can elaborate with details from my son's recent experience both before and at USAFA.

My kids were homeschool and therefore, never played on a "school" sport, despite having teams around in local schools (I'll let you guess the sport). They were part of a club team but participated in every available competition locally, plus as many as we could afford nationally, regionally, statewide, etc.

You don't have to play high school soccer or swimming etc., but you do have to compete.

It's not just prep for the CFA, as many an athlete who did not pass it can tell you. Sports teach perseverance, time-management, dedication, team work, strategy, craftiness... The added benefit of being in good physical condition is not too shabby neither.
