Does Norwich stack scholarships?

My son is a junior at Norwich now. He received a hefty Norwich scholarship his first two years along with a Norwich grant for financial need. The grant was small at first, but there is a little known application for unusual circumstances/financial hardship. The application takes about 5 days to fill out, gather supporting documents, write a concise summary of the situation, etc. His grant went from $350/semester to $7,500/semester. This was on top of his merit scholarship $22,000+/year and a couple local one time local high scholarships that first semester. In the end we paid only $7,000-$8,000 per semester. It was cheaper for him to go to Norwich than to an instate university (other than travel costs).

This fall he contracted with the Army and received a 2 year scholarship for tuition, etc. Norwich then applies the ID White Scholarship that covers the room and board. We had to pay for this semester as usual, but once all the paperwork went through all the offices they paid us back just before Christmas!

Good luck on the academy, but Norwich is a good spot to be. The FLC scholarship will cut your costs even more.

Thanks for the input everyone. DS has gotten a Type 7 AFROTC scholarship that he can convert to a 3-year Type 2 at Norwich. Still waiting to hear from USAFA, but Plan B is looking much better (especially the last 3 years)!

Congrats! Will Norwich cover 3 years of room and board, or all 4 years with the conversion to a 3 year Type 2?

They will cover 3 years of room & board, not 4, but they will also let him keep his Presidential merit scholarship up to the cost of tuition. So the last 3 years will be fees only & the first year he will have merit & other scholarships that will help. I was kinda hoping they would throw in the 4th year of room & board as well! Are you considering Norwich? My DS did an overnight in March (maybe april?) and then did Future Leader Camp this past summer.

@claynjen1 , thanks for the info, very helpful. It is on DS’s short list of schools right now. He is a HS junior. USAFA is his top choice, but AFROTC is his backup plan. He is applying to summer seminar at USAFA for the upcoming summer. He’s also looking at a few of the other academies’ summer programs. We are considering Norwich’s future leader camp if the service academy summer programs don’t come through. Did your DS enjoy it/get a lot out of it? Trying to understand if the 2k plus airfare (from the west coast) would be worth it. Or would an overnight be enough to figure out whether Norwich might be a good fit?

FLC also comes with a $2k/yr scholarship which sets the investment if you choose to send him.

One night was all it took my son, but about 50-70 rooks decide it wasn't for them a year. FLC is similar to rookdom enough it would be a decent comparison.

My son (now a junior at Norwich) did FLC twice, the second time as an assistant team leader.
It is a good way to get a deeper look at the SMC life style but I would not compare it to Rookdom.
There is no academic pressure, which is a huge part of Rookdom.
Many Rooks who are competing for on campus ROTC scholarships, and their families, often have a lot riding on that first year.
It would, however, be a great way to find out that it is NOT for you. If you don't like FLC you will not like Norwich.
But those that attend, like those that enroll in SMCs, are a self selecting bunch. Already highly motivated.
For a 16 or 17 year old that wants to attend an SA or SMC it usually reinforces what they are already thinking.
For Norwich it is an excellent recruiting tool. Stepping off the rappelling tower is often all it takes to close the deal.

I was wrong about what Norwich will offer along with the 3-year AFROTC scholarship. They will let DS keep his merit scholarship, but the ID white comes out of that. So the last 3 years won't be fees only. It will still end up being about 1/3 of the cost of an in-state school for him, so not too shabby. I had to have someone from financial aid go over the numbers with me to really understand it!
