Don’t have computer science in my high school.

I am a sophomore in high school and have been reading up on the requirements to get into the usafa but my school does not have a computer science course and it says I need a year. What should I do?

They’ll understand if your high school doesn’t offer a computer science course. Not all schools offer every single subject, and some high school students can’t pay for/take a college course at this point in their lives.

You could take another STEM elective course that your school offers. Think like engineering, anatomy, biomed, environmental science, forensic science, etc

Similar scenario, we used Microsoft courses to satisfy this requirement. IIRC, they were all (or almost all) free of charge.

Does your school not offer any computer classes?
My son got in without any real computer science classes. He took what our school had which was a semester class on how to use Microsoft Office Products and a semester class web page development. Definitely not high level programming or computer science.
He did take every science and math class offered to offset that. I don't think not having an actual computer science will disqualify you.

Neither of my boys took CS and both are currently cadets. Our school has CS but they couldn't make it work with IB and all of their sports, band, etc.

Take it if available, otherwise don't worry about and max the STEM courses available

My school only has coding classes which I am planning on taking besides that there is no other computer classes.

Coding will be good to know. That was a hard class for my cadet his first year. That was basically what his freshman computer science class was. Take those classes and I think you will be good to meet the requirement.

Every university, not just service academies, know what is offered at your high school. They take that into consideration. If its out of your control, then it is not held against you.

I agree that "Coding Classes" would actually count toward computer science. Coding is fundamental to Computer Science and Software Engineering.

Just like @T-37IP my DD's high school offered Computer Science but she was interested in taking other courses. She took a healthy dose of Honors and AP science and math courses and received appointments to the two SAs she applied to. She picked up coding quickly at USAFA and uses it in many of her math classes. I would not stress about it especially if it isn't offered. Focus on taking the school's most challenging math and science courses.
