Doolie Life-Female POV

They will give you a list for I-Day, but my advice is--don't bring white undergarments. Black are better. And actually, a lot of people in my squad ran out. I brought $150 and I had a lot left over. My parents came out on Acceptance day and gave me more/brought some stuff from home, so that played a major role. I ran around a 13 minute 1.5 mile the week before I came. And the appointee packet is triggered by accepting the appointment and doing like two other steps i believe. And no problem! I know when I got in last year, I had a new question every minute.
Awesome! I am still waiting to hear if I got accepted (hurry up and wait :). I recently ran a 14:30 1.5 mile for the AFROTC PFA. So I have a little ways to go (obviously I am not a great runner), but I will be doing track this Spring.

Thank you for your time. Few questions:

I believe there are two cadets in a dorm room, do you know how room mates are assigned?
What did you do for bank account, do you have to open one there?
Can you use a debit card in the cadet store instead of cash?

All the best at USAFA.

It is supposed to be 2 cadets per dorm room...doolies can however end up in 3 man rooms. And my squad was allowed to choose roommates. This is squadron dependent. They have a bank account for you, but I closed mine and switched to USAA (most people do this). And you can certainly get a debit card!

A little advice on the bank account. If you open a bank account with usaa (done online) prior to I day, you can give them the routing and account number and they won't open the federal account. That's what I did for my daughter.

In Basic, rooms are decided on a purely alphabetical basis. Since there are generally only 6-10 girls in each Basic flight (which become the girls in your squadron during the Academic year), the names could be close together (B & C) or rather spaced out (R & Y). And after Basic, my squadron allowed us to pick who we wanted to be roommates with for the semester. I switched to someone different after Basic because she wanted a different roommate than the one she had before, but other girls kept their same roommates that they previously had. Also, we were allowed to switch again at the beginning of second semester if we wanted to. I know some squadrons mandated that everyone switch rooms, so that is also something that is squadron dependent.

I was just wondering if they tested women for colorblindness or color deficiency or do they just test the guys?

Females are tested as well. DD went through a very rigorous eye-exam this past fall for PQ status.

You're not serious, right??

Serious question. Why would you think that they would only test males? What would be the logic? (It isn't a stupid question if you have a legit basis for the inquiry).

For the longest time I was told it was impossible for women to be color blind even by my science teachers. I recently learned that I had been taught all wrong for years. I was just wondering if the AFA checked because even my eye doctor said it was impossible.

A daughter can become a carrier in one of two ways – she can acquire the 'gene' from a carrier mother or from a colour blind father. This is why red/greencolour blindness is far more common in men than women. Blue colour blindness affects both men and women equally, because it is carried on a non-sex chromosome.

Hi! I have just received and accepted my appointment for the Class of 2022 and I have a few questions now that it is official!

1) Given the many responsibilities you have your first year, how involved in clubs and sports can you get? There are a lot of things I would love to try and don't want to miss out on because I didn't get with them right away.
2) What happens with items you bring that aren't necessarily restricted but you aren't told to bring?

Thank you so much! I am sure I will only have more questions as I get closer and closer to I-Day!

1. You can get involved in a few things even with your time commitments but don't spread yourself too thin. \
2. What kind of items are you referring to specifically? Because that is a broad question.

1) First things first. Prioritize your tasks then set reasonable goals. 1st task is getting through Basic Training. You accomplish this by being a good squadron mate. Continue to run, run, & run. Continue building up your core/upper body. You don't want to be that Basic FEMALE who makes everyone repeat exercises considered by some to be unpleasant, esp. when performed at 7,000 ft. The guys will think 'typical' and you already know what the females in your squadron will think/say. After Basic, the next task is passing 1st Semester. This semester knocks a lot of students out of civilian colleges; students who have a much smaller workload then you will have. Sleep & time management will take on whole new meanings. I guarantee you sleep will become your 1st favorite activity & will remain so for all 4 years. "The days are long but the weeks are short"...or so they say. You absolutely cannot fall behind in academics. Being on Academic Probation (or Physical or Discipline) isn't as much fun as it sounds. That being said, the Academy will introduce Club participation at the appropriate time so don't worry, you will not miss anything. Being in shape physically & academically will allow you to enjoy club activities as a stress reducer instead of another time suck which will unnecessarily increase stress.

1a) Enjoy the rest of your Senior year. You will only have one. It's the best time to hang out with your HS friends before you all split up. Have fun but don't do anything crazy (Have to say it, I'm a parent, motorcycle riding, bungee jumping, DUI, basketball, [leading cause of ACL's & concussions for girls], etc.) that would jeopardize your appointment. See if the whole family can getaway for a family weekend before you go. Those memories will come in handy later, for you and your parents. After all, they are sending a girl out to Colorado & will be getting back a woman in very short order.

2) Lots of older threads address this issue if you use the forum's Search function. Agree with 16lpontzer that it's a broad question. Congratulations and good luck!

One for every Doolie with up-link for parents, not too much to ask.

2) What happens with items you bring that aren't necessarily restricted but you aren't told to bring?

Just curious why would you bring something you aren't told to bring? They give you a list of things to bring and not to bring period.

Hi! I'm a doolie (freshman) at USAFA. I know after I received my appointment last year that I had a million questions concerning academy life, basic cadet training, and the likes. However, I was unable to get information from a female's point of view (aka what to bring or what you could bring). If you have any questions, regarding your freshman year in general--I will gladly answer them. Granted being a female vs. a male is not that different here, but I will be able to answer questions from a different perspective.

To go off of wiscogirl, I am a senior at USAFA and have obviously experienced the BCT life as both a Basic and as a cadre. Please let me know if you have any other questions and I can help elaborate on wiscogirls answers

Are you allowed to bring your own "paper products" to USAFA? Also, are you allowed to be on any medication while attending the Academy?

You are allowed any medication that a doctor has prescribed you to take daily. Some of these must be kept with the cadre, while others you may keep on you. Again this depends on the type of medication.
Also what do you mean by paper products?
