So a bit of background, I received a 3 year scholarship but ended up deciding the second year (my junior academic year) that it wasn't for me and dropped. I'm currently in the process of signing forms and am aware of the consequences (pay or enlist, etc.).

I was just wondering if anyone had any more up to date info on the the current situation. I would highly prefer to pay back, but what are the chances that they would veto my request and instead require me to enlist? If I do get to pay back the money, what sort of payment plans are usually put in place? (E.g. require immediate payback, can pay over time but must do so before graduation, or can pay back after graduation)? Is it possible to negotiate with it?

Any info would be much appreciated.

I know of a MIDN that dropped after the junior year. The MIDN is paying back 3 years worth of scholarship money in lieu of enlistment.

Do you know how his payment plan panned out? Is it a more generous one or is it pretty harsh?

Given your situation, the chances are slim to none that you would be directed to perform involuntary active enlisted service (AES) as the means of recoupment.

AES, as a means of recoupment, shall be considered by a PRB and the PNS shall make a recommendation to HHQ under the following conditions:
- Involuntary disenrollment (academic, etc.) of an obligated midshipman
- Navy midshipman DORs within 12 months of commissioning

You don't meet either of those conditions.

You payback terms are negotiated with Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Please see para 2.a of NSTC 1533/120 (https://www.public.navy.mil/netc/ns...16) - NROTC Disenrollment Acknowledgement.pdf)
