Dorms and the Air Force Academy

And... why would you even ask about random drug tests? A non user wouldn't care would they?

I think this is a little harsh. Based on CadetX's posts, I am guessing he/she is not particularly familiar with the Academy and is trying to learn more about it and about the associated military lifestyle. While I agree that this was a bit of an odd question to ask, I don't think it's fair to assume that there is deceptive intent behind it.

Even though weed is legal in Colorado now, it can only be legally purchased by someone over 21. And the shops check ID as soon as you enter, for both age and residency. Colorado residents may purchase 1 oz and out of staters may only purchase ¼ oz. As the vast majority of cadets are not 21 yet, if they are buying it is still through the back channels just like the rest of the college students in America. If you have a junior or senior cadet friend who is over 21, willing, and has a Colorado driver’s license, then you are all set!

You are assuming what I'm assuming.

You're guessing he's not familiar? He wants to know if he can live off campus! If anyone did any research at all they'd know this. Good guess.

I'm a non user and I care about how frequently I have to wake up at 0500.

Fair point, but if you knew virtually nothing about a place, would whether you would be tested for drugs be one of the first things you'd want to know before deciding whether to pursue it?

But not as a member of the military. It's still against federal law, and military members can still be punished for popping positive (or have paraphernalia).

Given the state that USAFA resides, I would say it's a fair question to ask if there are drug tests. Since it is legal, why would it be so bad if he wanted to smoke some marijuana (obviously assuming he isn't in the military--a tidbit he probably didn't know either)? No need to cast stones to the uninformed. That's why they're here.

CadetX, I don't think anyone has answered your question about if the dorms are nice. I would say they aren't really comparable to civilian college dorms. There are community bathrooms down the hall, but the furniture/beds are adequate. I would say that the BEST part about the dorms is the view. If you get an outside view (look on google maps and look at the top view of USAFA), especially during BCT, you will often find yourself gazing aimlessly out the window for hours at a time. The view is spectacular. Realize, the construction on the dorms is from the 50s-60s, with a couple remodels along the way, but I would say they are still in great condition. Current cadets may have a different opinion, but I don't think I would compare USAFA dorms to a normal college.

Yes, understood. My point was just a little basic education on the realities of marijuana being legal in Colorado. This thread is not the first time someone has mentioned it. The assumption always seems to be that simply because it is now sold legally that tons of weed have now flooded through the gates of USAFA. I really doubt that is true. I was just pointing out a very practical issue, which is the fact that maybe only 40% of the cadet wing could get their hands on it legally. Those under 21 can get it illegally, just like the rest of America does. (And they avoid paying the exorbitant taxes on it when they do!)

Any cadet who is or was going to make the extremely poor decision to use drugs that are still illegal under the rules they live under will still do so. We all know there are cadets who use but manage to never get caught.

Maplerock,
I am definitely not a user nor am I interested in attempting to take advantage of the legal marijuana in Colorado.
The question came to mind because someone else brought up marijuana, and because I had recently been subject to a drug test for my job. I am not afraid of being tested. I was just curious.

To address your other post, I understand that being accepted into the academy is a difficult feat. I have two friends that have been accepted and they have informed me of the process.
I do admit to being rather ignorant regarding the academy. I have only just begun to do my research; this thread being part of it.

Thank you for your help.

CadetX, please since you admit your unfamiliarity with this topic, read through the stickies above, thoroughly. Then go to the USAFA site, and read through all that , thoroughly.

You will find many answers to your many questions at both places.

Good luck!

CadetX,

May I ask how old you are?

I also agree with fencer and will take it one step further. Use the search function on this site.

Honestly, does it matter where you live? Trust me as a Mom of 3 that attended 3 different colleges, not one of them cared about that when selecting their college. Major was number 1 in their equation. Number 2 was it felt like home to them when they walked the campus.
~ Caveat 1: if you are older it can make a difference
~ Caveat 2: If living on campus all 4 yrs is an issue don't apply to an SMC, because that will be required too.

This is a long, long. long marathon...think a decade
~ 1 yr process for apptmt.
~~ Must have a nom. to get an apptmt.
~ 4 yrs at USAFA
~ 5 yrs ADAF commitment.

You can chose where you attend college (USAFA/ROTC), hence where you will live for 4 yrs. You can choose your degree. However, your career choice is ADAF's decision. Where you reside for the 4-5 yrs after commissioning is their choice. Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hannukah, Easter/Passover, summer breaks are pretty much a given between the age of 18-22. Not so much between the ages of 22-27.

Colorado is easily the best place I have ever lived. No other place comes close. My career takes me everywhere for a few years at a time. The day I was getting laid-off on a job in Pa. I received an inquiry for a job in Boulder. A month later I was there. My 2nd move to Colorado. It happened that my son was going into his 2nd year at the Academy. My wife moved out a year later. We were there until right after he graduated. While there, we had the pleasure of hosting many of his cadet friends.
You really can't beat Colorado for the people, the weather, and the beauty. It does snow, but keep this a secret, not nearly as often as people think. You could get a foot of snow one day and two days later it will be 70 degrees. Also, little to no humidity. My daughter spent 2 years of HS there and did not have 1 single snow day in that time. They know how to take care of the snow.
The greatest place ever!
I live in Florida now. It is nice, but not as nice as Colorado.

It is against federal law. Just because you live there does not make it legal. Also, even if you got someone to buy it for you and you are under 21, you are still comitting a crime. USAFA will not put up with that.
