My DD received her Appointment offer in the beginning of January, her packet toward the end and now another remedial. She wants to accept her appointment, but if she is medically disqualified which she is afraid of,she's in the position of going to another school and receiving academic and athletic money. We're afraid if she commits to Air Force and then for some reason gets DQ'ed she'll lose her other scholarship money(mainly the Athletic). I know it's a personal choice for us, but how many kids get medically DQ'ed after they have been offered Appointments. Sorry this is a rambling mess, but she's got a coach breathing down her neck for a committment.

but, National Acceptance day to all colleges is May 1st.

Sometimes colleges require athletes to commit early. My friend pole vaults and had scholarship offers from multiple schools her top two were harvard and columbia they required her to make a decision by the end of this week. For the stats she chose harvard!

I thought that full appointments were only awarded after one was qualified (or waivered).

Was she awarded a full appointment (which would indicate she was scholastically, physically, and medically qualified) and THEN it was rescinded by a late medical remedial/DQ?

Or does she have a conditional appointment?

If she has a conditional appointment (conditional on medical qualification), she cannot accept it until DODMERB qualifies her or she receives a waiver from USAFA.

Many with conditional appointments do not get the necessary medical qualification.

I've never heard of anyone having a full appointment withdrawn after it was awarded, unless an injury occured AFTER the appointment was awarded, or previous/existing illnesses or injuries were not reported at the time of the medical exam.

All appointments are conditional until R-Day. One certainly can be medically dq'd after an appointment is received by illness or injury.

Lamor - the bottom line is any illness or injury that occurs that would prevent your daughter from being at R-day or completing summer training will dq her. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. Life is full of risks.

What happens if your daughter received athletic money and is injured, can't play her sport and loses her athletic scholarship? Same deal. This happens as well.
If she currently has a specific injury or illness that you are concerned about then you need to contact Larry at DoDMERB.

Agreed. A "conditional appointment" is sort of like an LOA - "if you pass Dodmerb then you are in" and only CGA gives them (or does USMMA give them too?)
USNA, USMA and USAFA will give LOA's not conditional appointments.

The point I was making is it is entirely possible for an appointment to be withdrawn if one becomes not "qualified".
Appointment offer in the beginning of January, her packet toward the end and now another remedial.
This sentence is confusing. Unless there was an illness or injury reported to DoDMERB.

We're totally new to this whole process...with that being said. There is nothing in her paperwork that indicates it is a "conditional appointment" unless there is some sort of unwritten word that everyone else knows about, that all appointments are conditional and you can't accept an appointment because a medical remedial might be coming. What would have happened if she accepted her appointment, sent in all her paperwork, and then got the remedial? (Which basically happened, except she hasn't accepted her appointment yet)
Also, if she was injured after receiving an athletic scholarship, she would just be a red shirt Freshman. Like I said she has choices to make, I just basically wanted to know if someone had experienced a similar situation or knew of others who had experienced a similar situation.

In order to receive an appointment she would have to be medically qualified by dodmerb or have received a medical waiver from the academy if initially dq'd.
To have a remedial after an appointment is odd.

what academy did she get appointed to?

Sorry, but if you could re-state the problem, with the dates you feel pressured about, maybe I could offer an opinion. I just don't understand what the problem is, and why you feel risk.
Good luck.

Lamor, as JustAMom said -- send an email to "Larry" -- who is Mr. Mullan at DoDMERB -- with the info he usually requests (check this forum, and it will become apparent what info you need to send.) You ask "how many are medically dq'd?" but isn't it that you really want to know about your daughter's situation? If you read some of the threads on this part of the forum, you'll see Mr. Mullan will look into YOUR (her) situation and tell you what he can.

Oh, and don't wait just because it's a weekend -- he's there "24/7" :shake:

Lamour - Send me your DD's full name and last 4 o her SSN. I can provide you the exact status as of today and options. Larry.Mullen@dodmerb.tma.osd.mil. I will answer tonight if you send today OR if you have sent within the last 36:thumb: hours Ya can't get much better service than that:smile:

I had been medically qualified since July. Then I just informed one of Mr. Mullen's colleagues that I was thinking about having a cyst drained (along with wisdom teeth extraction). Because of that my DoDMERB status is now saying remedial, pending medical records for a procedure I have not even scheduled.

Thing is, I just received my AFA appointment yesterday (while my status was qualified.) Not really sure how the remedial changes the appointment procedure.

The appointment is still yours until you turn it down or are found disqualified and waiver denied.

I would make sure that you notify your admissions officer, and keep him/her informed through the process.

Also make sure that you submit the paperwork that DoDMERB is requesting in a timely manner.

I was in a similar situation. I received Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC 4-year scholarships which expired a few days ago. Its a risk you have to take in order to attend a service academy...:frown:

buffalo - Actually "buffalo," you were informed what was required in your remedial status. If you send me an email Larry.Mullen@dodmerb.tma.osd.mil, I will provide you specific instructions as it pertains to your case. The Forums is NOT the place to have that communication. Standing by....:thumb:

I just called buffalo at home. We are in synch and he knows exactly what to do:thumb:

Mr. Mullen you are just amazing. Did you realize it is SATURDAY?? You know I will have to send you some Maryland Crabs one of these days! So how are you handling all of the fame and adulation from your fan club :)
