DS earned 3 year AROTC scholarship to Va Tech in January. I am curious what are the chances he will get 31/2 or 4 year. He would like to contract so he can go to summer programs

It depends on the unit. Some units give out much more than others. Unfortunately mine does not really do upgrades, but I know others quite frequently give out upgrades as long as the cadet impresses that first semester.

It tends to vary by brigade (hopefully one our ROO community can chime in on this). My DS was a "walk on" non contracted Army cadet in 2015. By November of his freshman year, he was offered a 3 year. by the following February, his brigade extended it to 3.5 year including retroactive to January which was the beginning of his second semester.

But it is my understanding that some brigades and/or battalions prefer to offer more 2 year scholarships instead of extending half years. And I see the logic in that as well.

Best source of info would be your DS's own ROO.

DS inquired with the university unit he accepted the ROTC 3 year scholarship to and they said they do not typically extend the scholarship. They don't do 4 and they rarely offer 3 1/2. He reached out to all the schools he could apply the scholarship to and then made his decision.

I echo @AROTC-dad about it depends on the school, even more importantly the brigade. It also depends on the year. My daughter was also upgraded to 3.5, but that was several years ago, it is in the same brigade as AROTC-dad’s son. Now at her school, it seems like they are more rare. When my DD received her 3 year, 2 of the 3 schools said an upgrade was possible (same brigade), the school in a different brigade said that their brigade had not done that in over 2 years. Ask the ROO at your school of choice, it is possible their brigade does not do it either.
