DS put on wait list

DS still CPR. Has appointment to USMA. What would happen if a kid accepts WP but then after the May 1 deadline, USNA offers an appointment? Just a scenario (stressful to even think about) I have been pondering for awhile now.

DD knows someone who got waitlisted today and they saw between 75-120 on this years wait list. It was on some information they read. We are still CPR.
That was on a link to questions regarding waitlists. I saw that too. It also states that it was the information for C/O 2022 which confused me. I don’t know if 2022 was just an error in the year or if it was listing last years information. Did your friend mention anything about that??

My advice would be to commit to USMA after the 15th and remove himself from consideration for USNA... that is what my son is going to do.
That way, you gave it a good run, but in my mind, you need to go ahead and get the ball rolling.
I understand it may be difficult to give up on a certain SA, and you and your DS might feel stronger about it. But I for one am grateful for the appointment and would like to honor their earlier appointment offer with a show of gratitude by accepting their offer fully and without reservation, and get the show on the road.

That’s kind of my thinking too. I can afford to be less patient than he needs to be. I’m ready to book flights somewhere! Lol

DS is still CPR. Plan B is to take his AFROTC Scholarship to either University of Colorado or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Back in the 1980's when I was waiting for my Appointment Letter, my Dad and I would rush to check the mailbox everyday. Now my DS and I are checking emails and portals every day! Times have definitely changed but the strong feelings of hope and anticipation are still alive and well. Best of luck to everyone that is still in the hunt!

Hoping your son carries on your legacy. My DS is still CPR,he has a grandfather who was a USNA grad. Do you think CPR is a better position to be in then waitlisted? Just curious of your opinion as a USNA grad.

If USNA is waiting for the appointed candidates, then

No one can answer that on this forum. To ask if one is better than the other we would need to look at lots of data... and none of us have it. Bottom line... it’s not a TWE.

Realistically - the odds are against you for USNA at this point. Also remember, there are a ton of forms that must be competed, returned and approved by West Point before R day (eg, dental, medical, background, fingerprints, etc, etc etc). It takes considerable time to complete them all. If you wait much longer you could find yourself scrambling.

Not necessarily. For USNA they have not released the permit to report packet for any appointees. I have seen appointees complete this process very quickly if needed.

You will be subject to the timing and schedule of doctors, dentists, police (fingerprints & background) and West Point (allow up to 3 weeks to receive approval on forms), 3 mandatory online trainings (alcohol awareness, sexual assault & drugs). You'll need to turn 20 red Xs into green check marks. There are already two admissible packets out. Some will need to book flights and make reservations for lodging. Etc etc etc

Sure, you'll get it done. Again, if you wait until the last minute, you'll be scrambling rather than relaxing with family before you leave. Again, its 09-Apr, the odds are NOT in your favor for USNA at this point (IMO). Accept your appointment to West Point

WRT the USNA waitlist . . . sometimes they take a small number and some years no one comes off. They never take everyone and most years the number on the WL who ultimately receive appointments is very small. Not to burst anyone's bubble; just being realistic. As others have noted, it's all about yield. If more people decline than expected, then they will go to the WL. I would also note that, in the past few years, USNA has one of the highest yield rates in the country.

One word of advice in general (not directed at any specific poster). If your dream is USNA, you didn't get in and you're now accepting another SA, be VERY SURE it's what you want. I've endured more than my share of recriminations from candidates and their parents when the candidate attended another SA (usually USMA) because he/she didn't get into USNA figuring they'd learn to like it, it wouldn't be that bad, it was better than their other options (take your pick of reasons). They didn't like it and I heard about it. Some tried to transfer. One committed an honor offense in order to get kicked out. Not happy tales at all.

USMA is an absolutely terrific school -- as are all of the SAs. However, it isn't for everyone. Neither is USNA or USCGA or . . . If you don't really want to be there, don't "settle." Don't go hoping you'll learn to love it. Chances are that you won't. You could well be miserable.

Only go to a SA where you really want to be and enter a service in which you really want to serve.

The context of your advice is unclear to me because I’m having difficulty finding the post to which you initially replied.

Is this your advice to folks on the wait list, or to everyone still waiting? If the former, I get it because of the indeterminate time line of a wait list. If the latter, I’m skeptical because everyone still CPR has a very good chance of gaining clarity within the next 6 days.

It matters because, as this thread reveals, there are some people with USMA offers in hand still waiting on the USNA, and probably vice versa as well.

Put differently, having set May 1 as D-day, the Academies should be presumed to have allowed adequate time for those people who carry their decision to within 2 weeks of it.

Then why apply to more than on SA? Doing so either takes a slot from another deserving candidate that would love to attend or drags out the process for another until you decide to decline the appointment. Can't have it both ways.

That’s the reason I didn’t go to USMMA.
