I'm new to this forum, but see much valuable information. My DS just received great news today that he is medically qualified making him 3Q; Qualified academically, medically, and physically. The DoDMERB process went much faster than we ever expected so thrilled with that. Several weeks ago before being medically qualified DS was notified he was on HOLD NLW, but a week ago application status changed to blank. What does that normally mean? He is a recruited football athlete and had received notification that his weight exceeds requirements, but he did a BCA and his score came in as 20 and qualified. Attending USMMA is his number one choice from the beginning. It was his best college visit. He is very interested in engineering and physics and has been accepted into 21 other universities and colleges. What are the next steps in the process for him to receive his LOA or acceptance and how long are you normally on the NWL before a decision is made?

Congratulations on the 3Q status. Take a moment and reflect with your DS on what an accomplishment that is. You have done a great job as a parent and your DS is an amazing young man. I find that in the stress of waiting, most applicants/families miss this opportunity for celebration. Now on to your very reasonable questions. Unfortunately no easy answers. For my DD (class of 2021) her status went from hold to blank to offer of appointment within a few days. My DS (class of 2013) went from hold to offer with no blank space in between. As for the length of time as 3Q on hold, it varies from days to months. If your DS is a recruited athlete, he might want to reach out to the football coach for any information he may have. Otherwise, all you can do is wait along with many others on (and not on) this forum. One other perspective from a parent. Next year at this time, your DS will be gone and you will miss him dearly. Savor your last months with him so that you will have as many precious memories as possible while you are waiting through INDOC and waiting to hear from him while he is at sea. Good luck to you both, and do not hesitate to post back here with news or to share your frustrating with all the waiting.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I agree totally about your advice to savor these remaining months. INDOC will be here before we know it and hopfully, we will get that next good news in the process of acceptance. I know from reading the Class of 2022 Reporting Instructions there's a lot to do after acceptance to get ready for the big day. Only four months away. How was your daughter's first year in calculus and physics? Did she already do her time at sea? How was it?

My DD was unusual in that she had never taken calculus or even pre-calculus in high school (for reasons I won't go into here.) She struggled with calc at KP of course, but she took her older brother's advice and sought out help early. She went to office hours several times every week and got some help from her more math-experienced peers as well as upperclassmen she met in her fall sport. The key to success is being able to be humble enough to seek help early on rather than waiting. Most of these kids have never had to do that before. Those who are successful learn to recognize their weaknesses early on. They seek help and also provide help and support to their peers whenever possible. Physics was not as big of a hurdle for my DD, but for other plebes, that was their stumbling block. I can almost guarantee that at some point during their time at KP everyone will hit a wall. But the good news is that help is available. As for sea year, I would say my DD's experience was mixed, some of the most difficult times of her life, and some of the most rewarding. The difference was who she was working with. The crews on most ships change out on a regular rotation, so often times some will be more welcoming of cadets (particularly female cadets) than others. Overall, her time at sea was a period of growth and maturity, leaving her more confident and wise beyond her years.

Good to know of her expereience. Sounds like it has been rewarding and she did all the right things in seeking help early on.

I actually have a related question. I’ve been medically qualified and physically qualified with my application complete since November. I assume I’m academically qualified as well with a 33 ACT on both math and English. My status has not changed from “App on File” at all. Does this simply mean my file has not been to the board yet? I would think my status would have gone to hold by now. Does anyone know what this means? Any candidates in my same position?

I would definitely reach out to your regional contact at admissions. What you are describing is very unusual. You should be at hold status by now.

Thank you for reply. I will inform my ds when he returns from school. Last Friday, he got an email from usna admissions (also applying there) asking for a current English teacher recommendation. Does usna request waiver for usmma or am I thoroughly confused.

His medical status at usmma is pending.

Each academy requests its own waivers. They often have different standards for what is qualifying, what is waiverable, and what is not. Of my 3 kids who applied to all 5 academies only 1 was medically qualified to all the academies. The other 2 we're DQ'd to some and not others. Waivers were requested by some of the academies and not by others. Ultimately, waivers were obtained, but the process was long and stressful. It was pretty amazing to see how different academies handled the same medical issues so differently. I would have your DS reach out to his regional admissions representative at USMMA and see if they are going to request a waiver. If a waiver is requested, time is of the essence, so make sure to follow up with whatever further records or exams they want. Keep in mind that waiver follow up may very well be different for different academies. Good luck.

My DS's portal still isn't updated on Medical as Qualified. He recieved a Qualified notification e-mail from DoDMERB early Tuesday morning and he forwarded it to USMMA Admissions. Will they update his portal from the forwared e-mail or do they wait to get a notification directly from DoDMERB? Does the USMMA Admission board meet on Thursdays every week?

It usually takes a couple of weeks to get the DoDMERB update on the admissions website. The board meets weekly this time of year, but the offers do not necessarily come out on a particular day if the week. I feel your pain. I know the waiting is torturous. Hang in there.

Does someone tell you at USMMA that you are 3q or figure out for oneself

When I was put on hold status I received an email that said “Based upon the results of the academic screening and evaluation of your application, you have been found to be academically qualified ” and I passed my CFA and medical so that’s how I found out. Or I guess assumed that I’m 3q.

On your portal you will see CFA - PASS and for Medical - PASS. But it takes a while for the portal to be updated for Medical. My DS received two different e-mails saying he was academically (fromUSMMA Admissions) and Medically (fromDoDMERB) qualified.

Regarding the “hold status” does that mean a candidate is put on the NWL and can only be pulled from that for an appointment or is it possible to be selcected from your nomination slate. Or am I just completely lost lol. Forgive me I’m trying to keep myself busy and figure out this whole process.

Most (but not all) candidates who are fully qualified are put on hold anywhere from a few days to 6 months. Being on hold does not mean that you did not win your nomination slate. The permutations are much too complicated to try to figure out, so try to resist the urge to do so. You just have to know that if a candidate is on hold status, the academy wants to give him or her an appointment. Many factors determine whether it not that happens, including how many appointments are actually accepted. USMMA is a back up plan for many applicants who apply to other academies. In my experience, when other academies offer appointments in March and April, some USMMA appointees will decline and more available spots will open up. There are still many more Kings Point appointments to be made, so if you have not been turned down yet and/or have made it to hold status, be hopeful.
