Good evening all. As I-Day gets closer, I am finishing up my checklist. Regarding the razor, I am subscribed to the Dollar Shave Club, where they send me razors every other month. I was wondering if I could change my shipping address to my PO Box at the Academy and continue my subscription. Or can others (who've been at the Academy, or have DS there) give me any advice? Thank you.

I don't believe that you can receive packages during BCT, so for BCT at least that would be a no. As for the academic year, I don't know the rules, but I don't see why not. I'll let someone else speak on that

Definitely no packages for BCT. After that, you can certainly receive packages, but delivery can sometimes not be timely. My DS switched to an electric razor as soon as BCT ended. Apparently being made to stop everything and stand at attention by an upperclassman with shaving cream on half your face is not fun. At least that is how I understood his reasoning for switching.

People have been sending packages to Basics during BCT for decades via USPS and Basics have been able to receive them.

You might not be able to depend on the timely delivery to the basic but packages definitely get delivered. I can’t speak to UPS or FedEx delivery during BCT.

Whether you want it or not USAFA is going to issue you razors and shaving cream that will get you thru the summer.

FedEx requires a street address and will not deliver to a PO Box

Will do, thank you

We were told last year, that only letters on plain paper were allowed. We were told no pictures, no cards, and no postcards during basic. Packages would be held until after basic. Further, after basic, the package delivery gets extremely backed up with so many parents sending care packages after basic combined with cadets ordering textbooks. As a cadet sponsor, I accept packages almost weekly for my cadets and deliver them personally due to the package backup issue.

This is wrong on a couple points. 1) You can not receive packages during BCT. Plain white envelopes only. We had a guy in my flight during BCT that received a singing card from his mom (she was an O-9, she knew what she was doing) and we got beat for that. Cadre would often slide our letters between their fingers looking for any sort of contraband that people might be trying to sneak in with the plain envelopes. 2) I never saw a single razor or shaving cream issued. The BCT packing list states to bring a razor and cream. If you run out, the Cadet Store is an option.

Random question, but the packing list said to bring stationery and stamps. Are envelopes + stamps enough or should we also bring paper?

If you look up any definition of “stationery,” it usually means any variety of writing paper or note cards with envelopes. Bring something to write on, something to stick it in and stamps.

I’m old enough to remember when people wrote letters to each other.
This was the original form of a "chat room"!!

As a side note to parents:
Show your kids how to address and stamp an envelope...these days whilst all is done via email, portals, text and websites only a handful of youngin's have ever addressed and stamped an envelope.
My DS was a little fuzzy on it....crash course before he left...it was sad, funny and sentimental all at the same time.

I sent my son to BCT with some paper, envelopes, and stamps. It turned out stamps were all he needed. USAFA provided cool USAFA paper and envelopes for writing letters. He surprised me and wrote so many letters that I ended up sending him a couple more books of stamps during BCT. (Technically, they have the ability to purchase stamps at the C-store, but they aren't provided like the stationery)

Also, if C-store is not an option (as last year was very different and difficult regarding access) the cadets who had extra stamps and stationery were kind enough to share with those who have run out or were without.

I was glad to get the info on plain white envelopes only. I like to decorate envelopes and was wondering about that. Now I know.

Is it OK to draw or decorate on the paper inside the letter? How about drawings from children who are too young to write? I'm a grandma, so I don't always get all the info and I don't want to get anyone in trouble. Also, I'm assuming it's OK to include a book of stamps inside the envelope. Is that right?

I think that’s squadron specific- my daughter drew a picture for her brother basic cadet to be funny (nothing bad, just sort of making fun of us parents)— it got taken away… I heard on the Facebook parents page last year that some were allowed, but most weren’t

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll just go with writing at least until I hear differently from her.
