I am about to graduate and commission as a non-rated officer through AFROTC. I know my service commitment is 4 years, but does this commitment begin on my EAD date or the date after I complete my tech school? I know rated officers' 10 year commitment begins AFTER they complete flight training, is it the same for non-rated guys?

I believe it depends on the school. However, I would not worry about it. Let's say your tech school is a yr.

Arrive at school Oct 1, 2017 (EAD) - release 2021
vs
Arrive at Operational base Oct 1, 2018 -release 2022.

You decide to TA and finish your masters 2019. Either way you are stuck until 2022.

Go with no extra commitment for tech school. However, the AF sends you to Lakenheath. That is a 3 yr tour, PCSing in 2020, but due to timing you are not in the 365 day window, so now they PCS you to Pope. You want to end up in Oregon. You can't non-vol since you are not within the 365 days, and now you have to take that Pope assignment, which adds on more years.

I could do this all day long on how even if the school is 1 yr they can keep grabbing you. If you truly want to be out as fast as you can, than you really need to plot your career. There are many that do leave at 4 yrs ADAF, but impho there are a lot more that have to stick it out because either their PCS did not align or they took TA for their Masters.
~ Heck Bullet served 21 1/2 yrs because we had to PCS at 18 1/2 and that incurred a 3 yr committment.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you receive tuition assistance it is only 2 years extra from the last day of the class. That means finishing a masters in 2019 would lead to a 2021 release. If finished in 2021 then you would need to serve until 2023.

You might be right. I was just throwing numbers to illustrate how it can change so easily due to other factors that the OP has yet to place into the equation.

Let's be real they may get married to an ADAF member and that member may have a different PCS, but to stay together they stay on. There are just too many variables that starting to plot 4 yrs from now is impho unrealistic.

They may have an EAD of Aug 1st currently, but in 2 months from now that could be pushed to Dec. 2017. In 4 yrs from now their job maybe deemed critically manned and make it difficult to leave. In 2007 nobody saw the economy going into the tanks, but it did. Many ADAF members stayed on, which created RIFs for certain career fields and year groups.

I am not trying to divert the thread, just trying to illustrate that live for today. Enjoy your commissioning and your 1st assignment. Life is too short to start thinking years ahead.
