My parents want to come visit me when I am in port with the Eagle this summer, would they be visiting me before I go on it or after?

-Thank You

First, remember that Eagle is still part of Swab summer training. Once you find out your company and IF things haven't changed (which they could) then an assumption could be made that Alfa, Bravo and Charlie will be flown to Miami and sail to Savannah for their week of training. Delta, Echo and Foxtrot would sail from Savannah to Wilmington and Golf and Hotel from Wilmington to New London.
Is that set in stone? No. Being a member of a fall sports team or getting sick/injured could effect which week you go out on Eagle.
As far as parents are concerned, once you sail into port you may have the chance to see them. Remember that you will still be assigned to a duty, may have to give tours during time in port or be a part of a visitor's reception or just want to spend time with your fellow classmates. That being said, it also depends upon whether there is quick turn around time between companies and your return schedule to CGA.

Last summer, my son & I "Eagle chased" to Maine to get a chance to see my Swab daughter. We "lucked out" & managed to get, not only my daughter, but two more Swabs for most of a day. We went to see a movie, went shopping around town & went to dinner before taking them back to the Eagle. However, most of the time, they were VERY happy to just hang out in our hotel room, eating microwaved popcorn and watching TV!

This all happened at the beginning of their week on Eagle. I understand that some other parents caught their Swabs at the end of the week too, but as USNA1982 says, things can change & they DO have duties. I went with the plan to see Maine (my son had never been to Maine) and possibly see my daughter & say hi to her. Getting to spend time with her and some of her new friends was a big bonus! If your parents go with that attitude, they won't be disappointed. Eagle has tours and they will at the very least, be able to see you and probably talk to you. It is also a nice opportunity to meet some of the other parents (also chasing their Swabs) - we met some very nice people that way!

Keep in mind that EVERYTHING can change on very short notice. We went to visit our daughter swab summer in San Francisco. The boat ended up leaving earlier than planned, and her flight was very late. What was planned to be an evening of leave ended up being a 30 minute visit, and we were lucky to have that.

As previously stated, consider yourself "at work" while on Eagle. If you have any "time off" , you MIGHT be able to visit your parents, but you might not.

Swabs may be granted short periods of liberty during Flag Day and while on Eagle. This in not considered leave. The first leave period granted is during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Liberty is usually marked in hours rather than days, and grants Swabs/Cadets permission to leave the campus or their training assignment and may include overnight privileges.
You'll hear the term 'long' and 'shorts' being used by cadets. A long being a weekend (or multiple night) or a short being an afternoon (couple of hours) or overnight liberty.
