I have just finished my DODMERB and have just received a nomination (to USNA) from my JROTC instructor. When is the earliest I can receive a letter of Appointment to USNA?

If your status is "Complete Pending Review" with a nomination and no other required actions or special instructions, there will be several thousand candidates in the same situation, waiting until April 15th, 2020.
That means that all of those candidates (including you) have a chance to receive an Offer Of Appointment, but it is by no means assured. Only approximately 1,150 of those will receive offers.

With that said - the earliest Offers typically go out at the end of August - and typically only to those who have already received Letters Of Assurance (LOA).

So you can complete your application early and still end up waiting till April for an Appointment?

Also, people receive actual appointments by August (not LOA)?

Yes and yes. You might also end up waiting until April to find out you will not get an appointment. Always have a plan B, C, D, and E.

If you aren't already doing so, you should be exploring all nomination sources. Don't stop with just the JROTC nom.

Yes, you could end up waiting until April to hear one way or the other.

You'll see this posted often - remember it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Good luck.

Correct. I have read that there are only approximately up to 20 appointments available to all (likely hundreds) of National NJROTC and NROTC nominations. That means if every NJROTC SNSI nominates their battalion CO, you will be competing with potentially hundreds of others for 15 to 20 slots. So you must apply for every possible nomination to maximize your chances. MOC, Senators, VP, any others.

You cannot be offered an appointment until you have been deemed 3Q and have a nom. So if you are not eligible for a Presidential or JROTC nom, you would have to wait for your MOC noms to be processed. So the bottom line... you can hear any time between now and April 15th with an LOA or appointment. Also, it’s not first in, first to be reviewed. Mentally prepare for a wait until April... if you hear sooner, even better.

Never heard of it happening, but if @kinnem says it has, it has.
You need to quit taking those meds you are apparently on! I think I heard of one in August. I've certainly heard of one in September. On the early ones there is often a Presidential nomination involved but I expect some are sports related too. In any case an appointment that early is pretty rare.

I've seen it late Oct/early Nov. However, those cases are VERY rare and typically involve a candidate with entire package complete by end of summer (if not sooner), LOA, and Pres nom.

MOST candidates either don't have LOAs or need to wait on MOC slates being submitted. Thus, MOST successful candidates hear between December and late February. As noted, some get good news earlier and some won't get good (or bad) news until late March to mid-April.

I guess theoretically, if a candidate was the #1 high school five star quarterback recruit in the nation, 4.0 average, 1500+ SATS, completed DoDMERB (i.e., a unicorn) AND had a JROTC nom submitted by his SNSI or a Presidential nom, that admissions could - - and probably should - - "pull the trigger" and make an appointment as early as August or maybe even earlier. But that isn't reality.

Assuming an average candidate, I wonder how soon Admissions would give an appointment to a NJROTC nom given that so few appointments are made to NROTC and NJROTC noms.

I think you still have a blue & gold officer interview, congressional interviews and transcript request. Stay positive and stay patient on the long road. My DD is now at USAFA and we were very fortunate to get an appointment in January. YOu have abit of ways but the good t hing is you completed a lot of requirements and you can add to your resume...

Given so few appointments come from this non-competitive nomination category, the candidate would most likely need to have an LOA (or would have been given an LOA).
You are making many assumptions/hypotheticals...it is better just to let the process play out and not worry when you might hear.

With all due respect to the OP... chasing the answer to this question is the path to madness. Spend your time on your applications to your Nomination Sources and the NROTC scholarship, including the five civilian colleges with NROTC units. Then move on to any back-up plans. All the while, keep improving your CFA and SAT/ACT scores. Bottom-line: If a candidate views this as a 2-year process (in case you need to reapply), waiting until April is much easier. Don't give up the ship!
