Early action deadline

I got my deferral notice, despite being EA, on January 2nd. I wonder why some of these deferrals are coming out so late!

evan411,
My guess is that it is based on two things: competitiveness, and time of application submission. For those who applied really early (like in the summer) are hearing really early. For competitiveness, those who are obvious deferrals or obvious appointments or principal noms, they were easy choices and were notified with ease. I think for those who are tougher choices were held to the end for more thought to be put in.

USAFA just emailed me to say I have a message on my portal. I have not checked it yet, as I am going to wait until the end of this class period.

EDIT: Deferred. What is the point of making me wait this long just to send me to regular action? Why not defer me last week?

I feel the same way. I received my letter of deferment yesterday at school.. ACT score of a 32 is obviously not good enough right now. Haha, but I'm going to use it to train even harder and maybe retake the CFA to get some better scores.. Not that my original ones were bad, but still. Can we retake it?

DS just found out (11:45am EST) Jan 15th he is deferred. Email first, posted on portal. Same wording as posted by others earlier in this thread. In OH, great everything except CFA which was lower than he wanted (maybe he can improve on this now?). Have AFROTC scholarship interview this afternoon - Good luck to ALL!!

. . . I'm going to use it to train even harder and maybe retake the CFA to get some better scores.. Not that my original ones were bad, but still. Can we retake it?

No. In the past, you could only resubmit CFA scores if Admissions requested that you retake it. This was generally for desirable candidates that had a low CFA score or a low score on part of the CFA.

Love the attitude! I'm rooting for you! :thumb:

I can't believed I waited so long to be deferred

I feel your pain.

You've got a long way to go yet: the reality is most will not hear until March or later. EA is targeted at a very specific group of people: those who would otherwise receive and accept full rides to other top-tier schools.

EA is not something the academy owes anyone. An appointment is a privilege, to be earned by those who have worked hard for it. It never comes to anyone.

The Academy owes you nothing except what you earn: expecting anything from Admissions and USAFA is not going to be a fun experience. Good luck!

DS was just deferred - I guess I expected it but hoped for better. 34 ACT composite, 4.0 unweighted, salutatorian. His HS has no sports program, but he competes local 5k circuit. Boys State Lt. Gov, Pres of school club, 4 yrs monthly commitment to local community service org. 2 senate nominations. Took CFA at NASS this summer and maxed out in 2 areas, avg on others.

I have a theory that deferment would depend on how many of your MOC's nominees applied for EA. I mean, if Admissions can only choose 1 person out of 10, and only half of them sent in their apps for EA, wouldn't you wait to see all of your options?

Would you rather have a rejection letter?

I'm sure that those with deferrals are happy that it's not a rejection. But you can understand the disappointment of finding out that you have to wait a couple of months more?

That being said, it means your qualifications are good enough to still be considered! Congratulations are in order for having jumped one of many hurdles.

I waited two years for my letter. That wasn't even the hardest part. In fact, we still have a couple months until recognition! :thumb:
Look, it's understandable to be upset. To express such distress on a public forum site in this way, however, is not exactly appropriate or tasteful.

Letter of deferment received

DS just got his letter of deferment. He will find out when he gets home from school today. Sad day on the ranch today.

My DS just got his letter of deferral as well, which raises an interesting question. He was admitted to USMA yesterday. I believe he is required to make a decision within 45 days on that offer which means he has to decide by the first of March.

If the deferral letter is correct and he has to wait for the Air Force's decision until April it means he must decide on West Point without knowing his fate for the Air Force Academy.

My thought process is to give it until approximately Mid February and if he has no word to check with admissions, explain the situation and see if he can get an answer. His first choice is the Air Force but without a decision from them it could be a tough call. Any suggestions?

On the bright side, that is a very good problem to have.

Would you rather have a rejection letter?

It's not so much the fact that I was deferred; don't get me wrong, I'm extremely dissapointed. It's the fact that I had to wait until the last possible day.

Checked my portal 30 minutes ago do a deferral notice. I wouldn't otherwise mind, knowing that I am at least close to an appointment, but I have an AFROTC scholarship whose acceptance deadline is January 24th....

DS deferred as well. It would be interesting to hear Academy feedback on whether the EA process worked as intended. If nothing else, it definitely teaches patience.

I think everyone misunderstood what EA was, despite several warning by fleiger and others. Except for those who walk on water it was always going to be a matter of waiting a couple more months, which is what everyone has done in the past.
