Hi so West Point is no doubt my top choice school, but being the kind of person that I am, I always like being prepared and having a backup plan. Thus, I'm curious as to what's everyone's opinions here in regards to applying early action to civilian colleges in case one does not receive a nomination or fails the medical exam? Would one also be able to retract their early action acceptance from a civilian college if they were admitted to WP, or any other service academy?

Thanks in advance!

Since early action is non-binding it is okay but prob not a good idea for early decision (binding). I would just apply EA & regular to civilian colleges.

You should not apply ED unless you are going to enroll in that school if accepted. When submitting the application the obligations regarding ED are explicitly spelled out in writing and the student, parents, and college counselor must sign a statement acknowledging the terms.

Yes, it is possible to back out of an ED agreement, but you burn bridges in doing so unless the reason is one of the exceptions allowed under the ED agreement. A student at my son's private high school was the only student from the school accepted ED at a particular Ivy League college. When he backed out, the students that were denied ED at that college and their families were furious. As was the college counselor who had to deal with the aftermath.

All depends on your personal "standard." Past forum discussions breaks
down to what's the big deal, someone else will take your slot, it's not legally binding, might lose your deposit, it's different because you are applying to a service academy, to you made a commitment.

When you apply "Early Decision," what kind of commitment are you making?

If you have a significant other, would you leave that person for another person because he or she is a better deal even thought you get along with your current significant other fine?
