Hello Everyone,

I was studying some aspects of the Coast Guard Academy. I know it's quite small, so does that mean that there is a smaller student to faculty ratio when compared to the other schools? Also, does anyone know how much the education/training costs the government for each cadet? Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

Yes, 992 cadets enrolled presently.

so does that mean that there is a smaller student to faculty ratio when compared to the other schools?

The current ratio is 1 faculty member for every 9 cadets, 19 cadets in an average class.

Also, does anyone know how much the education/training costs the government for each cadet? Thanks.

According to their own web site, the cost of instruction per cadet is $71,349 per year.

Cool. Hey, at the academy, what is the criteria to earn an academic wreath w/ star?

A gold star with a wreath is a command pin. It's for the RC and CCs. If you're asking about the gold star, which is for academics, I believe it's a 3.5 GPA average, but someone who is there now would know better.

The gold star is awarded to cadets on the Dean’s List (3.15 GPA) for performing well academically.

The silver star means that the cadet is on the Commandant of Cadet’s List for performing well militarily (top 33%).

The bronze star denotes the Regimental Commander’s List and indicates that the cadet has improved their term grade point average by at least 0.5.

Blue stars are awarded for excellence in the Physical Fitness test.

Cadets who wear both gold and silver stars are on the Superintendent’s List for performing well academically and military.

Cadets who earn the gold, silver, and blue stars are place on the Board of Trustees List.

That is an old picture from the 1920s I believe. We don't wear those starts on the collar. The only place you will see a star besides the ones already listed is the star above the anchor on our collar devices and above the anchor on our covers. Our cover look almost identical to the Navy midshipmen covers, with the exception that the band is navy blue and that there is a little dull silver star above the anchor.
