Electronics for Fourth-Class Cadets

What provider has the best coverage/signal at Colorado Springs?

Our son had AT&T with an iPhone, lived in both dorms, and never had a problem getting reception.

Try to stay away from Sprint. We have it and though the first year was rough due to location(even texting was challenging), DD is on the 6th floor now and it isn't an issue. Anything lower is questionable in Vandenberg.

I second AT&T. I lived on the 5th floor of Vandy and the 2nd floor of Sijan and never had a problem with it.

DS has Verizon and has had no problems in Sijan.

Some other questions I have are:
Since there's restrictions on social media and internet use outside of the academy's network, would it be advisable to just have a phone without data?
Is facetime or skype prohibited?
Strictly phone calls and maybe text only?
If bringing an iphone or any smartphone that has the capability of wireless web use is just going to be stored away and not be permitted to use then it would be a waste to keep paying for unneeded features.

Thank you for all the input and help regarding these inquiry:confused:

Do u guys recommend t-mobile or Verizon?? I know that one of the membership from USAFA states T-mobile discount? So I was wondering if T-mobile works pretty well up there. I have Verizon currently but it's expensive.

Network Question

Yes, I second the second to last question. Can we use our own network outside of the Academy's?

Don't worry, during BCT, the cadre will make sure you are up on time. At some point, you will probably start to wake up on your own. During BCT you don't want to think to far ahead. Some use meal times as a way to keep in touch with time. You will figure it out as you go, not something you should stress over now.

This is true. :thumb: Chow to chow is how BMT went by for many of us.

i didn't want to make a new thread for this and it in a distant way relates haha but does anyone have any idea on when a year in the blue should be released? on their site it says post production is almost finished. i really want to see it already!

Are pre-paid phones acceptable? I currently have Sprint, and my family loves it because we have a very cheap everything plan. But, since I probably won't be able to use my data plan anyway (and I'll just have to get over not sending pictures) getting a pre-paid burn phone doesn't sound like a bad idea because I shouldn't be too active with it anyway.

Really? In the middle of the Electronics thread?

sorry i didn't feel it would be appropriate to make a whole new thread solely to ask whether or not anyone has heard anything about a movie that may be relevant to all of "us"

It was appropriate. I believe in "stupid questions" but yours was NOT a stupid question.

That being said, I would also like an answer.

Heard that my DS's roommie was warned with a cease and desist by provider to stop tethering otherwise, they were going to drop him from their service.:tank:
Hope somebody else can comment on your other inquiries as I am also curious.

Phone carriers now days want you to pay extra for the function to tether and/or share it's 3G/4G/4G LTE capabilities. If paying for the service, there is nothing wrong with tethering.

Also, there isn't a restriction on using your phone's internet. The restriction will only be on the phone itself.

I use Sprint for my cell phone at the Prep School, and the few times I've been up to the Academy (and also had my phone) I got about three bars. Now for personal internet purposes, I use a Verizon hotspot and Verizon is spotty at the Prep School, but rumor has it that AT&T and Verizon have the best service up at the hill. (Can't confirm because I haven't used my hotspot up there.)

That's about the extent of my knowledge.
