Hi Navy Friends,

DS received an email from field admissions counselor telling him he had received a nomination. Great news as DS had not heard yet from MOC. Anyway the counselor was asking if DS had any test scores. DS has taken ACT 2x and is scheduled for Dec 12. He doesn't want to send his scores. I think the rest of his file is strong. He has good leadership - student council president, football captain etc. and strong GPA and did well on CFA. But his test scores are definitely an issue. Will his file go before the board w/o a test score? Should he submit his prior scores? Any advice would be appreciated.

You say the counselor asked if DS had any test scores. It seems to me the only honest answer to that question is “Yes.”

DS could say “Yes. But I believe I can do even better and am scheduled for the next SAT. Can I wait to see the results of that test before submitting scores?” If the counselor asks for the previous scores, of course DS should comply.

The SAs superscore. And the application deadline is still weeks away. So perhaps DS can buy time. What he should not do is be dishonest or defiant.

As the other SAs do, USNA looks at the whole candidate. He has a pretty good toolkit going now. If they like him but have any concerns about his testing ability, they may consider him for the Naval Academy Prep School or refer him for a Naval Academy Foundation Scholarship at a civilian prep partner school, which is essentially a “golden ticket” for the Class of 2026, if he completes the prep satisfactorily, gets a nom next cycle and stays physically qualified.

But that’s jumping ahead. @MidCakePa makes excellent points too.

Admissions is massively busy from now to the end of the cycle. They are dealing with COVID challenges and a new IT system transition. Someone stopped and took the time, out of thousands of applications, to email your son and check on a key point. They are interested. He did take some tests, which at least provide real data, as opposed to not having been able to take a test due to COVID.

I always lean toward errors of commission rather than omission.

USNA Admissions had an Instagram live this week. The Admission Counselor addressed this. He stated if a candidate wants him to hold his application, and wait for a better score before sending to the board, he would hold the app for the updated score.

My 2 cents: If it was my kid, I would advise him to communicate with the AC and let him/her know that he has been practicing to raise his score and he will be taking the test on X date. I would also have him ask him the consequences of waiting vs. sending in current scores. It seems to me the job of the AC is to assist the candidate the best way possible. Hope that helps.

Send the scores, all of them. They super score so doesn’t matter if something is little off. If they are all low well then that’s another matter but doesn’t mean the 3x will be drastically better.
