As was the USNA Glee Club singing "Eternal Father" at the Capitol rotunda during President Bush's funeral.

Responding to this old thread with another question on sports. Under Athletics it states that all midshipmen are reuired to participate in an athletic program. However, if you try out and don't make one of the D1 sports teams do you have to choose one of the club or intramural teams? or are there other options? Also, are you allowed to try out for multiple D1 sports teams?

Mids are required to participate at one of three levels: varsity, club, intramural. One typically does not try out for varsity, as USNA competes at D1 and those athletes are recruited. Doesn’t mean one can’t successfully try out — some do — but it’s just not common.

The brochure states that all Mids play some sport but they do count Choirs as sports due to time commitments. No the Glee club doesn't have a scheduled workout. Some club teams do have tryouts and do cut people. I know Softball had to reduce their number but that might be a budget reason for traveling to Nationals. Good Luck.

You are very wrong here. Lots and lots of USNA Varsity athletes are walk ons/not recruited. Neither I nor my son were recruited athletes but successfully walked-on. Some sports, Squash, Boxing and Crew come to mind where few of any are recruited. There are opportunities during Plebe Summer to try out for teams and I know many who did so later on in plebe year or even later.

^^^ True all above. During PS there are tryouts and briefings, and other opportunities by talking to coaches in later years. Some sports have more flexibility than others. One of our sponsor daughters, a volleyball recruit, played that for 2 years, missed her HS sport of hurdles, showed the track coach her HS times and asked for a workout she could do over the summer. Made the team and happily hurdled her final two years.

I had edited out of my post something similar to your sponsor daughter. A good friend was highly recruited for soccer but went out for another team as a plebe and by graduation was a multiple time All American and post graduation, a member of the US Olympic Team. This was in the 70's
