Anyone who has experience with AFROTC at Embry-Riddle, I would be grateful if you could weigh in with your opinions on the detachment. My son has a Type 2 AFROTC scholarship and ERAU just awarded him an additional scholarship. He's quite please, to say the least. While there are still other options on the table (USNA, AFA, and other schools), he is finding ERAU very attractive at this point. So a few questions for anyone who knows:
1. Should we contact ERAU's detachment directly if we have questions?
2. Should we notify the admissions office that he has the AFROTC scholarship?
3. According to the AFROTC website, ERAU typically awards scholarshipped students $7,500 in tuition waivers. Is it reasonable to assume that is in addition to what they've already given him?

Unfortunately I cannot speak of any of the above asked questions. But I will say, if you have not visited ERAU yet, I highly recommend that you do. Beautiful campus with solid programs (one of the few, if not only school that offers a UAV degree :D).

The ROTC program across the board solid as well from what I found. Very large unit sizes for being the private school it is; I know Army & AF was around 200 each. Can't speak of NROTC - but imagine it isn't too far off in numbers.
 
which review was your son?
My daughter has been accepted to ERAU, and into their Honors program, too and was awarded a pretty nice merit scholarship from them but is waiting (and waiting, and waiting) to hear abotu her AFROTC scholarship. I'm pretty sure hers was in the Jan. review but we haven't heard anything.
I believe the additional scholarship for ROTC students is indeed in addition to what you've already been offered, but haven't spoken directly with Financial Aid office.
We visited the camus probably 4 times and spent a lot of time with the AFROTS and were very impressed. We've viewed quite a few other aerospace engineerign schools, too so we have some comparison.
 
He received his notification December 21st. Hopefully we can make a speed trip down there in February. Thank you both for taking the time to respond. Best of luck to your daughter. If she ends up there, keep in touch. The waiting is the WORST!!
 
Vareporter--my DS was also admitted to ERAU and was very impressed. While he chose to apply his AFROTC scholarship to another university, ERAU was a VERY close 2nd choice, as it is an excellent school. FYI, the ERAU AFROTC detachment was awarded the "Right of Line" award this year for "large" detachments, which means that it is the top AFROTC detachment in the nation. (My son's detachment also received this award for "medium" sized detachments, so he made a good choice, as well.)

By the way, you mentioned that he received his notification on 12/21. I hope that means he has accepted the scholarship within the time limit. I say that, because I just responded to another post you made about whether or not to accept ROTC before having an answer on academy appointments.

All that being said, best of luck to you & your DS has all the options are weighed!! You must be VERY proud--as well you should!
 
Everything I have reviewed in the paperwork says he doesn't have to accept the scholarship until May 31st, 2013. We saw nothing in the paperwork saying he needed to do anything earlier than that. Now I'm a little panicked that we've missed something. EEEKS!!

The board results are not released until about Feb. 15 (online) + letter a few days later.

... I do not know of the conditions of accepting an AF ROTC scholarship - that is something that Pima would know more of. Otherwise, I would recommend contacting either your son's interview officer, or your ROTC point of contact ... or maybe even Maxwell AFB.

First, congratulations to you family and your DS. My DS also was accepted there and the honor program, as well. Unless, things have change to should tell them about the ROTC scholarship. If I remember, because he as earned and was awarded an ROTC scholarship. The money the school gives would be reduced. And yes, if you have questions call the ERAU's detachment, because it will not hurt. The school has a lot to offer and is a wonderful school. You should go and check it out. It has a lot to offer future students academically. I only wish, my DS would have gone there, but didn't and in his fall semester of his senior year. He admitted that he should have gone there. If you have any additional questions, please let me know and keep all of us updated. Tell you DS thank for his commitment to serve the best country in the world the United States of America.

Vareporter--if I am mistaken, my apologies. My recollection was that my DS had 30 days to accept, but I may be confusing his AFROTC with another offer he received. To be safe, you should contact the AFROTC HQ to be sure. But again--congratulations!
 
No harm, no foul. You were giving me the best information you had. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Luckily, I was correct. We have until May 31st to accept his scholarship. Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to respond. I have never belonged to a forum with such helpful and supportive members.

1. If you'd like, you can contact us at 386-226-6880. Don't be afraid to call if you have questions.

2. Financial aid should know if you're coming in with a scholarship, but if you want to double check you can contact them at 386-226-6300.

3. The assurance grant is something that's completely up to ERAU and may change without notice. I can't speak officially to it, but it's likely that this would be in addition, however they may alter aid that was already awarded or change it for the spring semester. That would be an issue to discuss directly with financial aid.
 
Thank you, Eagle 1. My son is really excited about ERAU. We will contact the financial aid office. I'm crossing my fingers that he will get the assurance scholarship and still be able to keep the keep the EARU Scholar scholarship we were recently notified he was awarded. Honestly, it's only with the combination of these two scholarships along with his Type 2 AFROTC that we'd be able to afford to send him there.

Just an FYI -- Daytona speed week (i.e. Daytona 500, etc.) is in February (not sure of the exact dates). Most decent hotels are already booked and the ones that aren't will significantly raise their prices during this time. Also, if you decide to come in March, I believe Bike Week starts March 8th.

Thanks, FutureLTmom. Unfortunately (or fortunately, whichever way you look at it) I have a hubby that is a NASCAR fan. So Speed Week is a well known fact in our household. :rolleyes:

We are in a serious time crunch here, unfortunately. We are flying to CA for two weeks for my active duty son's graduation from his school with the Navy. My youngest (the AFROTC recipient) graduates a few weeks later. Then my daughter graduates from UVa the weekend after my DS' high school graduation. Not a lot of time for a speed trip down to Daytona and still be able to avoid Speed Week and Bike Week. But, darn it, we will make it happen. Because we're parents.....and THAT'S what we do, right? :shake:
 
Although my DS could have attended a different college on a baseball scholarship, he had his heart set on ERAU and their AFROTC program. He is currently a non-scholarship freshman at ERAU and a 100 in DET 157. After his first semester couldn't be more confident in his choice of schools.

He was successful in his walk-on attempt to join the baseball team and is hopeful to receive an AFROTC in college scholarship.

What you would be most interested is...

His plans are to attend ERAU and become a 200 in DET 157 for the 2013-14 academic year even if it means paying out of pocket for another year. While many may find it foolish....I can't think of a greater compliment to a program than for a 19 year old to be willing to take on a large debt in order to participate, especially when he has other options.
