Back in my day (not sure if it's the same way now), plebes were doing some/all of the following during what is now termed "reform" -- when the upperclass return.
-- Moving to their ac year rooms (and cleaning them -- very time consuming if this wasn't a plebe room during the summer such as, for example, if its in the other side of Mother B). In my day, there were no carts or trolleys, so moving your stuff handful by handful (or duffle bag by duffle bag) could take awhile depending on the distance b/t your old & new room.
-- Doing company-area spirit activities, such as decorating boards, windows, etc.
-- Obtaining books and supplies for classes
-- Making sure you had everything for your ac-year uniforms and knew how to wear them
-- Learning rates and doing come-arounds
-- Formations and meals and chow calls
I seem to recall having a bit of free time but being very afraid as the upperclass were around for 2-3 days but weren't allowed to talk to us yet. So they just watched us doing the above. It was a good time to be on best behavior!
