DS, unfortunately, was rejected by USNA today. Still waiting on the rejection from USAFA, but blessed with AROTC and NROTC. Time to move forward with plan B at a very prestigious engineering school. Some takeaways for future applicants: if you want to go to an academy start planning freshman year; our DS didn't even know about the academy or ROTC till his summer of junior year and started working to add leadership but at that point, it was a bit too late. Secondly, be confident in all interviews for all schools and for all scholarships. Although our DS was rejected, he is very thankful for the doors the application process has opened for him. Without knowing about these schools, he has said he wouldn't have applied for ROTC as he had not known about it, never even took interest in the idea of service to the people, and never would have imagined having the opportunity to serve the country. On the track to attend USNA/USAFA he found a job he's very passionate about, got options to choose for ROTC, and made friends around the country via CVW and camps. To everyone who got a nomination but didn't get in: Think about it like this; you received a nomination from your congressman(not many people can say that) and you were fit to attend, but sadly they don't have room for everyone. Our son is proud of how far he's come and complete the process and everyone should be too.

Great outlook. I would argue that this is not the end of the road though, just a point where the road veered off in a different direction. Some of my most enjoyable trips have been when I have taken a different path than planned, but still ended up where I wanted to be. Sounds like your DS is on that journey now.

SAME camp in Ventura County last summer

Without question this is the most underappreciated camp experience for anyone aspiring to SA or xROTC. DS#2 attended the camp at Port Hueneme several years ago. He was medically DQed from an NROTC 4 yr scholarship. He enjoyed the camp so much, he would have enlisted in the Seabees on the spot and never come home if he weren't 16 years old.

He applied for an received a sponsorship, so the cost was airfare. Writing the essay for the scholarship was good practice.

@Worriedparent2 , sorry to hijack the thread. Sounds like he did everything right, so congratulations.

Now you can change your screen name.

Same general take. The road to a commission as an officer hasn’t ended for your son. He is just taking a different commissioning path. His quest to serve in the military will be rewarded by a commission earned through one of many fine ROTC units throughout the country. I can see him as an Ensign or 2nd LT somewhere down the line. It’s a smaller Navy and Army and chances are he will run into the friends he made during this whole application process. Good luck to him and you in all future endeavors.
