I was hoping someone more knowledgeable on this topic could help with some questions/clarification...

I have been doing a lot of research into the Coast Guard and specifically the Academy. It is something I would like to do, however, I am in a (possibly) unique situation.

I applied for USNA back in high school, did the whole process, got a few nominations, and so on. I did not end up getting in and so I enlisted in the Navy and am now in the Navy Nuclear Power pipeline. I did pretty well in high school as well, 3.8ish gpa and about a 1200 on the SAT.

Anyway I was just wondering if putting in an application is realistic. It’s something I definitely was pursue, I just know so little about USCGA so any tips or recommendations would be great appreciated.

Thanks!

Just wondering how old you are? You can’t be over 22 when entering the USCGA.

How exciting! A couple of questions come to mind... Do you have college experience? Are you under 23? Served less than 6 years in the Navy? You might research the AESOP program (Enlisted Selection) or the prep opportunities, as well as other CG commissioning sources such as CSPI. Also reach out to Lt. Leon at CGA for accurate info. Best of luck to you!

I am 19. I don’t have college under my belt. I have only been in the navy a couple months. I am a couple months into nuclear field A school.

I researched the AESOP program and it looks like a great opportunity to visit CGA. I could be wrong but it seems to be really only for enlisted members of the Coast Guard. It doesn’t say anything about other branches.

Do you have any insight on if CGA would even look at picking up a sailor from the Navy?

@cmsullivan18

What are the terms of your enlistment contract? Did you take any kind of enlistment bonus or guaranteed advancement?

Many nuke power school enlisted personnel make the jump to USNA each year, no problem since it’s all Navy, but leaving your nuke power pipeline to go to another service has to meet the needs of both the Navy and the CG. The Navy recruited you and brought you into its nuke pipeline, a long and expensive process and an investment in staffing highly technical ratings. People with your kind of ability don’t grow on trees, and the hurdle is if the Navy has brought in enough people to fill their nuke rating pipeline, which is adjusted for expected attrition for academic, conduct or physical reasons. You wouldn’t be a “planned” loss.

You are no longer interested in trying for USNA and a career as a Navy or Marine Corps officer? Did you enlist planning to serve as a Navy nuclear sailor or to re-apply to USNA?

As Capt MJ mentioned, if appointed the Navy would have to release you [DD Form 368] from your enlisted contract and/or any additional obligation you may have incurred by attending A school, but you're welcome to apply to the Coast Guard Academy. We have appointed active duty applicants in the past from other branches of the military (I can think of at least two cadets currently at the Academy who were Army and Air Force), but it's fairly rare. You can also attend AESOP or any of our campus visitation programs, but your command would need to issue you TDY or permissive orders for your travel to the Academy.
