So my basic training ship date is May 16, 2017. If I were to receive my appointment during basic training, what would happen? Thanks

That would be pretty late to get an appointment, but it does happen every year. If you did get an appointment while at basic, they would most likely follow the same procedures for assigning any other enlisted soldier to USMA. Haven't heard of any cases like that, so it is just my assumption.

To be on the safe side, if you haven't gotten the TWE by the time you leave, make sure your RC knows where you are and that parents or someone else know how to check your portal.

I you don't get an appointment and still wish to attend, reapply as soon as you get to your unit.
