My DS was denied admission and is having s hard time coming around to the Plan B school. Has anyone else contemplated a different career path into the Coast Guard? He is extremely bright and motivated to lead.

OCS after a college degree. 17 weeks to get commisioned. That is my DD plan if rejected by 4/1.

There are many options into the CG, enlisting is a very viable one. If the end goal is a commission, there are many options from the enlisted workforce to obtain it, it just takes a little longer then 4 years of college. There are many variations of OCS too, check the CG recruiting website for details. One example is a program called Direct Commission for Selected Schools (DCSS). It allows graduates from many different Senior Military Colleges the chance to earn a commission without the 17 week OCS route. Another option to serve in the CG is as a civilian as a Federal Employee. Good Luck to you.

I was also recently denied for the second time. I am currently in AFROTC and. I was wondering if enlisting in the CG reserves while in school and then applying for OCS afterwards is a viable option.

CSPI program is another which will pay for your last two years of college. Check gocoastguard.com for details, as there are restrictions. There is also a program at some colleges and universities called the Auxiliary University Program. Check to see if your your Plan B school. It works through the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and is involved. It does require specific courses. I don't know numbers, but some/many (???) who have completed it were accepted into OCS. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more details.

Yes it is, it is exactly what I did. Make sure you are aware of all implications of the reserves, you could be activated, you will have to do boot camp, A-school in the summer, so you won't be able to do summer school, etc. Good luck.

I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your reply. We had no idea about the AUP and by God's good grace, his Plan B is one of the 20 in the country. I got to watch the light come back in his eyes yesterday afternoon when I told him about it. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been spending a ridiculous amount of time trying to find a compromise, because he was so defeated by the rejection. He came so far in the process, but this was his first real "failure" in his life. Good that it's his first, bad that it's his first. Oh well. Moving on and trying to infuse some excitement about graduation and college life into our house again.

Great men and women often have more failures than success. The difference between them and others is great men and women rise up and keep trying. May all our children continue to rise up! Semper Paratus!

Not sure if this is his first or second denial, and it sounds like you may be onto a plan already, but if you haven't checked out prep schools, I'd encourage him to look at MMI. It's a top prep school for USCGA. Our DS is there with many Sponsored and Non Sponsored cadets for all 5 academies but I know there are a large number from CG.

He was blessed to receive amazing private scholarships from MMI to offset nearly all his tuition costs. Great leadership opportunities, others with a common vision , leaders and professors with military mindset and 36 college credits. DS applied in May last year after late notification of TWE and it has been the best place for him.
