Ens. Cameron Kinley

Undermining the chain of command should have been covered during plebe year. How is going around the acting SECNAV’s decision directly to the POTUS acceptable because one does not like the decision? The SECNAV didn’t do anything illegal, immoral, or unethical. One’s opinion doesn’t matter…clearly respect for the chain of command was broken for anything but a good reason. It was also done multiple times through various mediums, to include the press. If an officer conducted themselves in this behavior, I guarantee they would get an LOI and their FITREP wouldn’t look so good.

The only reason for the reversal of this decision is due to undermining the chain of command…what other services do is their prerogative, but not a reason to cry foul.

However, the SECDEF made his decision, so it is what it is.
It seems like they are rewarding unprofessional behavior? I don't know the acronyms but wasn't he made an officer around the time of graduation?

Ridiculous statement. Isn’t Cameron this ensign’s first name? “Assist us in our recruiting efforts“ indeed. Whoever wants to be part of a clown show, step right up.

"In the meantime, we know Cameron will take every opportunity on and off the field to represent the Navy and the U.S. military to the American people and assist us in our recruiting efforts," Austin said in a release.

> Likely much, much less........

> Just going to throw it out here -- he has little , if any chance, of becoming a successful officer when he is done with his football "career." I really don't know anything about this guy (nor do I really care), but he violated the very first rule of being a junior officer --don't bring negative attention upon the Navy or your Command. Sure, he may have won his battle, but there will be consequences in the long run.
I don't see how those working with him will trust him. My experience with people who do things like this is cause a lot of ongoing drama and chaos but contribute very little as far as what needs to be done. There will be another time when he doesn't get his way over something not life or death.

I actually don’t believe he is an Ensign. Like Perry, I believe he will swear in as an E-3 or so in the reserves. Perry was slated to be a 2ndLt so I believe he is a LCpl. He won’t get the commission until his football time is done. I am curious about details…because I could see Perry facing it this year too (Dolphins drafted some talent at his position). Kinley is a long shot to make a roster. Perry could go either way this year. Does a practice roster count? After 3 years, the practice roster is no longer an option and no NFL pension if they are out of the league after that. What if they aren’t medically qualified to serve after?

I have pieced that together from multiple articles and other social media. Not a fan of how any of this was handled. Curious to hear if the baseball player was approved also, but haven’t found anything on that. He might not have fought it either. He was much quieter than Kinley, so he could be enjoying basket leave and preparing for whatever his service assignment is.

I missed the part about him not yet being commissioned. So he’s a well-educated lance corporal.

Nice

I think he was and asked for it be rescinded. Not 100% on this… seems he was not commissioned at commissioning/graduation, but was shortly after. And then asked for it be rescinded to pursue the NFL. Which would align with Perry’s delay. The articles are all over, but as best I could figure out, I think that is what occurred.

Connolly did not fight it. He accepted the decision, as disappointed as he was. The word on the street is that he was a shoo-in to get drafted with his pitching stats.

Kinley had a good season, but not a spectacular season. He didn't make any post-season AAC team, including honorable mention. Obviously he had a good enough try-out to turn some heads of the Bucs organization.

I have no problem with him wanting to pursue his dream, but the way he went about it is just wrong. Going straight to the POTUS is the ultimate in bypassing the Chain of Command.

Nobody has said why Perry and now Kinley are not inactive Reserve Officers but I'll surmise that it is to prevent them from accumulating any time in grade as an O1 so that when they finally DO go on active duty that they will be starting with their TIS/TIG clock at zero.

Let’s say Perry spends 3 or even 6 years in the NFL… now a 26 (not bad, there are some) or 30 year old 2ndLt at TBS with a beat up body from the NFL. Wonder how that would work. My guess is he is a 3 year NFL guy and goes to TBS with some current 3/C or even 4/C Mids. He keeps saying he wants to serve.

Or - he gets a DQ-type injury or enough concussion protocol incidents to make him uncommissionable. NOT wishing it on him, but it’s not an office job.

I find myself scratching my head as to how Kinley can serve as an "Ambassador" for the Military. Hopefully, the DoD has a plan to manage this issue with the press. It will be a real shame if every time Kinley's story gets some press, the gist of it will be how he was being treated in a discriminatory manner by the Navy. No actual evidence that ever happened, but so far that seems to have been the story. Then again, I have my doubts there will even be a story since I think his making a team in the NFL is somewhat unlikely.

But when are they “done” with the football part? If they get dropped from a program, can they try out for others (pardon my ignorance and verbiage about NFL)? Or is that when the are to serve? Or are these all details we won’t know. Seems that as public as Kinley has been, that we should know this part as well. Seems fair 😬😂

Fair questions and what I am curious about. Does practice squad count? That only lasts 3 years. Reynolds played in the very short lived XFL or whatever it was. Are other leagues an option. It’s more curiosity for me than anything.

Same. And if it wasn’t all out there, I probably wouldn’t even be curious. But this seems to be a can of a whole lot of different worms. Imo, mostly related to how it all went down. Now I do wonder about the same with Perry.

It’s funny…I’m a track and field geek. And just today, a sprinter was dropped from the USA Olympic roster. For ‘breaking the rules’. And the President publicly opined on that stating ‘rules are rules’. Yet here we have this also going on. I know it’s different. But kind of seems like the more one whines, the more the get their way these days. No reflection of if Kinley should play or not. Just an observation of how rules really aren’t rules.

But I’m a “rules are rules” kind of person. That’s how I tend to roll.

While MIDNs have stated here and in other places that Kinley is an exceptional guy, and while I would wish him the best, I still think this for me, comes back to expectations.

I think that there should be clear guidance that the expectation upon graduation day, is to commission and serve. This is a can of worms for sure with this latest hullabaloo with Kinley. Is it bad timing re optics regarding 'discrimination'? Possibly. Does it appear he completely circumvented the chain of command to achieve his goal? Yes.

A huge pet peeve for me, and likely brought the dragon wrath every time, is when one of our kids asked me, didn't like the answer, and then went around to dad. They of course didn't tell dad I had said no-or the reason I had said no, they just did the rope a dope and went around me. Hated it. This feels like that.

I can see moving forward where some pretty good athletes might see SA's as a means of receiving an excellent education with the pie in the sky dream of the NFL as the end game. Seems precedent is being set and I think it's a slippery slope. But, that's just my civilian take on it.

I don't like the way it was done but I guess he will get his shot and I wish him well. The NFL is not D1. I knew a young player who was a offensive lineman for a pretty good D1 school. Good enough that he was invited to a NFL camp. I saw him in the Fall (he was not signed) and asked him how it had gone. He told me that as a standout in D1 every year you might go up against one or possibly two players who are as good or better than you. In a NFL camp every player is as big, as fast and as good or better than you or they would not be there. Again, I wish him well but he should keep plan B in the back pocket.

Just to clarify ENS Kinley didn't bypass the chain of command as much as the SECDEF exercised prerogative to intercede. That isn't going around your chain of command. As a commander I often review and modify decisions of subordinate commanders to align with my overall intent for the organization. I trust that SECDEF who has significant operational time has the right judgement to determine what is in the best interest of DOD and felt that the SECNAV decision needed another look.
