European Air Force Bases

Don't forget to pack a Rick Steves' book. His info was essential for us and his theme of seeing things like a local was spot on.
It would be fun to see how "Let's Go Europe" has evolved since then. I miss sleeping on trains and waking up in foreign countries. lol

I wasn't in Europe with the military but lived in Germany for twenty three years after college. To own property is costly (depending on what and where you buy and what and where you are comparing to) but renting is probably what most do anyway if you aren't staying for the long haul. The only thing that is truly super expensive is gasoline. (Thus the smaller, more efficient cars). Otherwise the cost of living is pretty cheap, food and drink is all EU subsidized, so very affordable, the transportation network is so good that you don't even need a car. Sales tax is high on non food items but it is included in the price so you aren't as aware of it as when it's added at the end. Overall even with higher taxes, I found it easier in Germany to live on a small budget compared to the US.
