As a freshman I participate in soccer, wrestling, and track. That being said I do not have any clubs I belong to. My time is very restricted due to my sports and classes I take so I don't know if I can join any clubs. What clubs should I try to join to improve my chances of getting into West Point/Navy Academy/ AFA. Also, I am the only girl on my schools boys wrestling team, will those colleges like that? Also, will they want a specific number of volunteer hours? By my senior year I will have 80(high school graduation requirement) but should I have more? Also, does the level of sports you are in count(jv or varsity)? Thanks to those who answer!

Hi. I'm also a freshman and I'm a girl on a boy's wrestling team with one other girl. From what I've read, it's better to attain a leadership position in a few clubs, rather than join a lot of clubs. If your school has an FBLA or an SGO/SGA, it would be a good idea to get involved in those

Wow! Boys team! Congrats! Sports take a lot of time, try to be captain/leader in 1 of the 3 varsity sport you are in. Keep your grades up, take all honors & AP classes that you can handle, & do well on SAT/ACT. I would recommend taking at least 2 SAT subject tests to keep competitive. Maybe you can join a community/summer club outside of school that is less time consuming?? Best wishes:)

Find the things you enjoy doing and do those. If you can find a service club that could be nice. I don't know if there is a female equivalent to Key Club, but that would be a good one. (Is Key Club co-ed now?) JMPO though. DO not waste your time on something you do not get satisfaction from (note: satisfaction and enjoy are different words).

Thanks for the reply! Also, I would join key club (it is co-ed)except for that it is very time consuming and goes on during times I have practices for sports. I'm going to be doubling up on both honors chem and honors bio next year, and taking all other classes honors except history.

Thank you for replying! I plan on taking honors chem and honors bio next year and am in the year ahead of math. I might take honors math next year but I might not since I am also taking honors in every other class except for history. Now I am not in any varsity sport, but plan to be on varsity for all three by next year. I don't know of any summer clubs, but I will definetly look. Would a summer sports team count? Do you have any specific recommendations for clubs I should join?

In my sons school APs are higher than honors, try some APs too:) Find a club you enjoy, do you like debating, kids, writing, art, maybe volunteering once a week? Remember it's all about quality over quantity. I like a kid who volunteered 1-2x a week at the same library for 5 yrs than a kid in 10 different clubs.

Ok... but at my school no classes are available for sophomores at the AP level, maybe I will get college credit for one of my electives if I get in. My junior year I definetly plan on taking AP classes. I will check with my local library to see how I can volunteer. Thanks for the help!

I wouldn't worry about AP classes this early if that isn't something your school does (mine was the same way). Also it's great that you are in 3 sports but it's going to be tough as classes get harder to maintain that and your grades. If you love all 3, that's great, but excellence and leadership in just one or two are better than just average in all 3.

Have you looked into civil air patrol or sea cadets? These programs typically only meet once a week and can provide some valuable leadership experience without a massive time commitment

Good direction USAFA10s,,,, Get into something outside of school and build on the program. You have got to balance everything. Sea Cadets/Civil Air Patrol are structured so you can achieve and demonstrate leadership positions and a key is to start now, most schedules are very flexible. Don't forget your junior year to look up Girl State (American Legion runs it)... Check the previous class profiles of all the academies and that will give you an idea of what to try and check off based on your strengths.

Or do what I did. Join a ton of clubs early, one's that have significant value such as honor societies and one's where you have potential in, and work your way up. I joined a ton of clubs as a sophomore which is advised against. But by senior year, I had a president position in several of them and was an officer in the others. Whichever I didn't I just didn't list them on my application. So rather than officer in 1-2 clubs, I was a leader in approximately 6. Just know that there'll be a lot of long nights, but for me, it was worth the sacrifice. Do what you can with your time. Best of luck!

Btw, I've wrestled ever since I was little so a round of applause for you doing that. Not an easy sport by any means
