Hi

Can anybody suggest what eye exam needs to be done for a SA candidate? My DD is a junior at HS, so wondering if I can get her eye exam done and find out pre-emptively if there are any issues. I totally understand that even if there are issues, waiver can be requested by individual SAs when a official DoDMerb triggered exam is done. Also, any idea on cost.

thanks

Our DS did his via DODMERB in August this year. It was done at a provider listed in DODMETS. It was by all appearances (lots of eye dr. visits for him, myself and DD as we all wear/wore contacts) a thorough eye exam and didn't appear to include anything out of the ordinary. There was no cost to us as it was done via DODMETS. Did include color test (re to test for color blindness).

I want to pay for it as DD is still a junior and has not filled any application.

I believe I understand what you are asking, but correct me if I am wrong. Are you asking what specific things are done at the eye exam test?

I had mine in July, but they did a color blindness test, depth perception, and then the normal “can you read the letters” test. Nothing major.

So there is no private eye doctor I can take my DD for exam ( similar to what DoDMerb conducts)?

You are required to go through the DoDMETS provider (I believe). Tell your DD to complete her app ASAP so she can get referred to DoDMERB. Specifically SAT/ACT, transcripts, CFA I believe.

Not that I am aware of.

I'm not a physician, but as a dad of two sons who went through the DoDMERB process, I recommend that you treat your daughter like a "regular" teen. Take her to her routine doctor appointments. Most candidates are athletes and require a pre-sport check up anyways. Also take her to a normal eye exam. There is nothing "extra" special about DoDMERB exams. The questionnaire Form 2351 is far more critical.

The DODMETS eye exam is very routine - nothing special about it. They are looking for obvious problems, and test corrected and uncorrected vision, as well as for color blindness. Don't sweat it.

I might be missing something here, are you wanting to take her to an eye dr. now (she is still a junior) in hopes that exam counts for DODMERB? I am confused. I agree with AROTC Dad, regular check ups for Eye and Dr. should be all she needs now. When and if she applies and gets a good way through her application then DODMERB will be triggered. Our DS was assigned a DODMERB provider about an hour away from us, they were an awesome eye dr. and office. He actually said he might want to switch to them for standard exams.
And to be honest, if there are any underlying issues that might trigger DQ or remedials wouldn't that just stress her out for the next year? Going through it in real time has freaked me out.
Just my 2 cents.
