I'm sure there are hundreds of threads just like this one but i couldnt find one so sorry moderators! I am a junior who was accepted into NASS and will definitely be applying next year. I am just wondering how the whole waiver process works because my eyesight is -5 dioptic and I know I wont pass the first Dodmerb test, even though my eyes are in perfect condition and correctable 20/20. Thanks!

I really don't know if this has been brought up before or not. If your sphere (the first set of numbers) is less then -6.00 for the sea services and -8.00 for USAFA/USMA then you have no problem. If the Cylinder (second set of numbers) is less than -3.00 for all services you are good. No need for a waiver then. And if the numbers you state are correct then you should have no problems in the next year or so in getting into one of the service academies or ROTC programs from a visual acuity/refractive error stand point.
 
well I just assumed i wouldnt get the waiver b/c my brother applied 2 years ago and has better eyesight than me and Dodmerb failed him on the eye exam. I mean my eyes are in perfect condition, I just cant see without my contacts. If you do fail the eye exam, how does USNA, or any academy for that matter, decide who gets a waiver and who doesnt?

Most likely what your brother encountered was the USNA's "soft" disqualification for distant uncorrected visual acuity greater than 20/40, and the qualification letter he received from DoDMERB stated that he was "Waiverable". That is an administrative issue that is up to the admissions department and the Supe to waive, so it is not a medical disqualification, DoDMERB provides that information to the Naval Academy.

That item should be the least of your worries!

This was being discussed about a month ago, and there was word that the percentage of those admitted in this situation was going to be made larger, or possibly ignored. Does anyone have any further on the issue? I would expect it probably remains to be seen :shake: :yllol: after the 2011's are all in and totalled up. But I was just wondering after reading this thread.

There is a RUMOR, let me say that again, rumor, how about one more time, rumor, that the whole 20/40 waiverable vision issue MIGHT, again its a MIGHT, be going away. If anything happens it will not be until 1 July 07 when DoDMERB starts reviewing physicals for the new class year.

As of right now DoDMERB is still processing all applicants the same way, and they will not change in the middle of a class. If admissions changes the way they do their portion I wouldn't know.

So again, this is rumor!!!

Admissions has assured me that A. Nothing has changed, B. The eyesight blurb that has been missing for the last couple of years will be going back into the catalog.
I am waiting for the admissions rush to lessen and will talk to the admissions medical section to confirm all of this. I agree that it IS confusing in it's present rendition.
 
usna 69, what i meant was that physically there are no defects or actual physical problems with my eyes. I just have bad eyesight. If that makes any sense?

If you are at -3.00 for your cylindrical measurement then you should be good to go. If its over -3.00 then it will be a disqualification and you will need a waiver.
