FaceBook Etiquette

So... we are using social media (SAF) to gossip and criticize others who use social media? Ironic. ;)

Ha ha, but seriously, I only use SAF to gather information which is not available on the ROTC or Service Academy websites.

I and most people here do not use SAF to do any of the following, which seem to absorb most of the activity in other social media sites:
- advertise my lifestyle
- promote my views, or my/my company's products, or my "personal brand"
- advocate for my tribe / creed / dispensation / faction / party
- attack my (real or imagined) ideological or other foes
- spill the unfiltered contents of my id

To use the Yelp taxonomy, SAF is almost never 'cool,' rarely 'funny,' but often 'useful.' It's not a substitute for anything in the physical world.
No mo', no less.

Re helicoptering, it may help to recall that in this country, 18 year-olds are legal adults who are not only entitled but also enjoined under our laws to make their own decisions regarding matters of property, contracts, employment, marriage, civil rights and obligations etc

I like the USMC boot camp approach of a bus ride onto base, a 15 second phone call home and radio silence thereafter...

What a surprise, I agree with you.
I have absolutely "no internet footprint" when it comes to my name or where I live. I have never made it a rule in my house, but none of my kids use social media whatsoever. I don't judge people who use it, but it's just not for me.

I am a child of the 60's and I never once smoked pot, so I realize that I am something of an anachronism.
Semper Fi.

I occasionally ask my DS to tell me if he feels too much rotor wash from myself or his mother. I take full credit for doing it a few times.

It is no easy task to shove our young out of the nest. But if we have done our jobs well, they will not only fly, but soar.
