I am going to start off by saying, I don’t under FB, the whole thing confuses me.

Anyway. My wife just came in to inform me that there are Midshipmen parents boasting on FB how they are driving onto the Yard, delivering Pizza, taking Carry-Out orders, driving over to Chick-fil-A, and so on. They must have drive-on base access privileges.

My wife made it sound like these out of control parents are taking Party orders.

My wife told me that there was a FB post on a parent group (post now removed) showing a picture of two dinners. One was from a non-varsity Mid with a mystery meat along with a vegetable and a starch. The other was from a Mid in his company, who is on the football team. His dinner was tri-tips on rice with lobster tail. There were over 200 comments in less than an hour. None positive.

I saw that one. If the image were true there is a disparity that is concerning. That is all.

Overall, I get it. Football brings in $, and they are not fed by tax dollars, so we really can't complain. But it can't make Mids feel like they are all equals...
Great point on feeding the football team. Their meals come from different funds and the players have different nutritional requirements. I’ve read though that the quality of the chow the rest of the brigade eats is not good. Moldy food compared to steak and lobster is ridiculous.

Also good point on equality. They are being treated equally because they are all getting food. Like aboard ship when the crew gets fed, the chiefs get fed, and the officers get fed. What and where all three groups get fed though is different. I wrote on another thread a few days ago about when food on the mess decks runs out the cooks put out hot dogs floating in water on the steam line or cold cuts. I wish I could say what we call cold cuts. Meanwhile the officers enjoyed their family style meal of roasted chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamed corn, buttered rolls, and chocolate sheet cake. The cake came from the main galley but the rest of the food was prepared in the ward room pantry which isn’t a pantry but a small galley. The cooks and mess cooks assigned there are top performers and wear clean smocks and not dirty T-shirts like the sailors cranking on the mess decks.

Anyway, we are all treated equally in the real navy but there’s a huge falloff in the equity department.

Stuff like the surf and turf makes a small portion of the Brigade mad. Personally, I don’t really care. The fancy food is paid for by football, not by King Hall. If my team offered me steak and lobster I’d eat it.

Have you ever heard of the fungibility of money?

Example: Congress appropriates stimulus $ to states and cities. $ goes into the general budgets freeing up other $ to shore up pension funds.

I think DFACS at all SAs are struggling. They normally would not be serving the entire BDE at this time. You would have athletes and other groups traveling, some on exchanges, more going down town to eat. Throw in the necessity to enforce extra sanitation measures and social distance measures. It’s a tough nut to crack and I’m sure it will improve. Much as it does for deployments. The first unit to a location lives quite austerely. MREs and T-Rats (think Soylent Green). Subsequent units things improve.
Just a point on the surf and turf. That’s not real lobster. Real lobster has claws.

Reference parents bringing food. I’ll be the first to say they should stay away from events. But I’m not so sure I’m against them bringing food under the current conditions if they are in a position to legally do so and don’t use it as an excuse to socialize.

The football vs non-football menu issue is the same at every college i know of (with a football team). They all have a separate dining hall and the quality of the food is way better. DS used to eat in the athletic dining hall on lab day as a midshipmen, although I don't think he was supposed to. When I went to visit I always joined him and looked forward to the experience.

I would also point out tbat money from different souces is not always fungible. Money has a color and it's not all green. Red money needs to be spent on red items and nothing else.

Yup. I ran a small military budget once. Heaven help me if I spent office supply money on computers.

University of Alabama has an athletic dorm which they allow honor students to live in. They are also allowed to eat in the mess hall with a small surcharge.

My '21 USMA son went on a visit there and was blown away by the regular food much less the athletic food. Sounds like all the academies need to feed their typical cadets/Mids better this year. This is where the "They are soldiers or sailors first." argument falls down.

The one with the dupe mess key...

One of the very few times I found the book and the movie both enjoyable. I normally find a movie version of a story disappointing.

Mids know the football players eat and sleep differently, and most are fine with it. Actually, it doesn't really matter if they aren't fine with it! I believe in this case, the football players were all eating with their companies, and not the team. So the Mid with the mystery meat was sitting next to the fancy dinner. I just think people want this all over with, and tensions are high. Everyone isn't even back yet. My son found out it could be 6 more weeks before his return. As much as he wants to be back, he's enjoying a nice beef tenderloin dinner that I am grilling tonight!

Alabama football makes life good for everybod.

We are sponsoring some Mids and have brought food to them on the yard as they only have liberty on the yard the past few weeks. A lot of sponsor families are either active duty military or retired military and can access the yard. But everyone has to wear a mask. For those who are not familiar, most Mids order food out when they have liberty and have it delivered to the gate. One of our Mids had a company dinner last night. Our Mids said that they have the option of taking their meals to-go or they can eat in one of the outdoor tents. Enclosed is a video that the Academy posted about the Sponsor program and how important it is to the Mids to have a home away from home.

Thats interesting. Because letters were published in the Gazette, and sent by the Supe, that no one is to go on the yard. So we don’t. As much as we WANT to, we don’t.
