My son is a 1st year at Norwich University. He was just awarded a 3.5 yr Army Scholarship starting this semester. Do we still have to fill out a FASFA if his tuition is fully covered?

Congrats on the scholarship. Agree - you don't have a crystal ball for what the future holds, so prudent to file in case you need a plan B backup. Also, I'm not sure if Norwich covers room/ board for ROTC scholarship recipients, but if you qualify for any aid that financial/ merit aid those*possibly* could be used toward those fees.

Check with the Norwich financial aid staff. I know many schools require the FAFSA and/or the CSS Profile be completed to receive the school's internal financial aid, even if a student is not eligible or applying for other outside financial aid.

Norwich does provide a grant to cover room and board. They really make themselves a great option for ROTC scholarship recipients and also great financial aid for non-scholarship students.

I would always say fill out the FAFSA for the holy crap moments in life no one sees coming.

When DS was applying Norwich was the most responsive and amenable school we dealt with. They offered $36k in tuition when he received the NROTC scholarship. Their staff provided him private cell phone numbers and staff messaged on weekends.

If he didn’t have USNA as his #1 he would have been in Vermont.

I’m pretty sure to get the grant for room and board at Norwich you have to fill out the FAFSA. The schools seem to only talk about financial aid once that is filled out.

Congrats to your son on earning a 3.5 year scholarship. Do you mind my asking, did he try for the national scholarship when he was a senior? My son is going to Norwich in the fall and had his Army rotc scholarship interview up there with the PMS last month. If he doesn’t get selected for the national scholarship I’d hope he could one like your son. Any advice appreciated!

He did not apply for the national scholarship--he had his hopes on one of the SA's and we were rather clueless about the process.. That being said, he absolutely loves Norwich. He took his Rookdom very seriously and worked very hard academically his first semester and things just fell into place. Good luck to your son!

You will receive a packing list and, as I was told, pack only what is on the list and make sure he has everything that's on the list. After rook week, they're allowed packages, etc., to restock snacks and toiletries. Good luck!

Don't buy anything yet. I think in April or May after my son accepted to Norwich we were invited to join a parent facebook page and there is/was a ton of great information there. As Madre2725 said, only pack what's on the list. Feel free to PM me at a later point if you want more specific information.
