Failing a class?

Will usafa 100% rescind an appointment if you happen to fail a class for a quarter in school. I am in danger of failing a class right now and here is less than a week left. I have a 50 in pre calculus

I'm not sure if there is any set rule that they will take your appointment away, but I obviously wouldn't recommend failing. Do whatever you can to get the grade up as much as possible. Surely a D looks better than an F.

Any chance of improving the grade by 4th quarter? The final average grade (end-year) will be the transcript grade, right? Spend some after school time and get extra help from your teacher or a tutor. Let your teacher know your circumstance.

^^^^^^^ DO THIS!!

Totally agree with @1mom
Without fail, talk to the teacher, get a tutor, drop any outside activities that are distracting you. You probably know why you are not doing well. If you earned a USAFA appointment, then you are too good of a student to not know how you got into this situation.

Take action and stop reading this forum until your grade is back up!

Even if failing Pre-calc doesn't jeopardize your appointment, your response to this will make or break your future approach at Colorado Springs. You will become a better scholar.

My son's school only posts the semester grade on their transcript so quarter grades aren't even seen. If this is the same at your school then work hard to bring your grade up. Final high school transcripts aren't due until June 10 for my child.

YellowFellow, this is the time of year to buckle down. Senioritis is a huge epidemic problem for high school students. It overtakes the brains of 17 to 18 year old high school zombies every year, sometimes to their peril. There is no vaccination. The only cure is to reach deep and find that motivation that pushes you to finish strong. You got this, now go and do what the others have said; get help, stay after school; quit time draining activities that you don't need. Just do it!:lolatyou:

Yellowfellow - you're having a rough time with your appt, aren't you? I hope the security background check has been received! I'd contact admissions & make sure they have it.

As for your grades, and this applies to everyone, now is not the time to slack off! USAFA wants to see that you're someone who gets the job done - all the way to completion! I do know someone whose grades slipped significantly and he failed a class - he lost his appointment. Do NOT let this be you.

No I just decided now to announce it because it seems to become increasingly perilous as time passed

Run, don't walk, to get extra instruction (tutoring)!

I can't stress the importance of this statement. Don't wait any longer. DS had a horrible time in AP Calc because he didn't quite get the principles taught in pre-calc. Going to the academy, your Calc class will be 10x harder than the AP classes taught in high school. The good news is, once a good tutor is found the light bulb will start to click on. DS brought his failing grade up to a C+, which was't the best for sure, but a huge "wheww" from failing. I am a single mom and I scrimped, saved, and begged his grandma for tutor $$ help (they are not cheap). Good luck! Calc is hard, but you're obviously smart as you've already been offered an appointment. You can do this...as long as you don't wait any longer!

This is your second thread about having an appointment revoked. Bottom line, get off this board and go study. You have your appointment, you know you have paperwork to fill out when it arrives and need to stay in shape. Nothing at this point except anxiety is going to help. Hire a tutor, go get help, study. Bottom line, take your future in your hands, don't leave it up to USAFA.

yellowfellow,

Not only should you get the extra help, but continue to study up until I day. USAFA is known as the little engineering school in the rockies. You are stating that this is only PRE calc, not Calc or AP Calc. Many of your peers will have Calc or AP Calc under their belt before they show up at CoS. Profs know this and just like a traditional Ivy League college classes are going to move at a much faster pace. Profs care, but unlike your HS teacher they are not going to slow down the class because you are struggling....that's what office hours and tutors are for, If that foundation is not there than you are going to see this problem continue next fall. It will only be that much harder to get in front of it when you are there because you will have additional stressors.

Time to place your priorities in the right order and as a parent I would say that means it is time to get off this forum, your xbox, etc., and instead do some math problems. If the teacher only assigns the odd numbers for HW, do the even numbers too. If you have done all of those problems go online and google pre-calc study guides.
~ My kids during mid-terms and finals with classes that they were struggling would go online and see published practice tests.

I am not trying to be Janie Raincloud, but give you a glimpse of what life might be like next year if you just do it until the end of the school year and think puling a C or D is going to be enough, and than take the last few weeks of being home before reporting to USAFA to decompress and have fun.
~ If you said to me that this class was AP Calc, or AP Stats and Differentials and you pulled a C in the end, I would have a different opinion, but pre-calc in the 3 different HS that my kids (AF Brats) attended was not considered the hardest class for curriculum. My DS1 (AFROTC) and DD were not going to a STEM college and they graduated with not only pre-calc, but also either AP Calc or Stats.

Just saying at college those will be your peers. I get maybe your HS ends with pre-calc, but your HS is a pond where you are the big fish, next year you will be in a lake as the small fish again. Think back to when you made that jump from 8th grade middle to 9th grade HS and how those teachers expected more from you because you were no longer in middle school. That jump is nothing compared to the next one when it comes to academic foundations. Say what you want about the SAT and ACT when it comes to weighing it for admissions, scholarships, etc., but the reason why they use it as a bar has two reasons.
1. It tests the academic foundation you have acquired through HS.
2. It equals the playing field nationally. Everybody takes the same test regardless if they live in Elmore County Idaho or Fairfax County Virginia.

Good luck. You can do it, but it will take a lot of committment.

Don't let the appoinment go to waste! There are others who are doing what they're suppose to be doing in school and getting good grades in AP Calculus, but who are still waiting and hoping for some good news from USAFA.

As previously stated, there are many people right now who are wishing to get appointed to USAFA, but are still waiting. I'm one of those people and I got a B+ in Honors Pre Calc as a Sophomore, a B+ in AP Calc as a Junior, and now have an A+ in AP Stats as a Senior. But USAFA appointed you first because they saw your potential and you now have the responsibility to study as hard as humanly possible and get that grade up. Best of Luck! FLY HIGH, AIM HIGHER!

Pima is dead on right! To give you some perspective on what others have done, my DD finished Calc II in high school, then decided to retake Calc II at USAFA so that she was sure her foundation was solid. That foundation is crucial!

Ok - I'm sure you're feeling picked on and badgered. No one on here wants to do that to you because they all truly care. You're on track to become an officer in the Air Force. That's no small thing. Hang in there. Study hard. Keep your goals in sight (don't be distracted by unimportant things).
