Falcon foundation scholarship 2018

Every year there are up to 100 Falcon Scholarships awarded. In the past few years, there have only been 60. This year, there are 60 allocated across the prep schools on a first come, first served basis (32 NWP, 10 MMI, 7 NMMI, 7 R-MA, 2 Kent, and 2 Greystone). The cost for the whole year ranges from $4K to $15K depending on which option you choose (assumption for NWP cost is that you stay at home 2nd semester and attend a local university). The percentage varies, but each prep school offers a scholarship in addition to theFalcon scholarship to help with the cost.

Honestly, NWP restricts your time more than USAFA does. It's just for a much shorter duration, which makes it manageable. The second semester is a really good opportunity to figure out which of your study habits worked and how to build productivity into a fairly empty schedule (which actually does help a lot for semesters at USAFA where you have lighter days on your schedule.) I probably learned more during my semester at a civilian school of how to get help academically and plan ahead for busy exam weeks than I did at NWP, but NWP set me up for success by developing time management and study skills.

My DS is current candidate for USAFA awaiting word of appointment and such , but his plan b is NMMI for their service academy prep. How have you liked your experience there ?
 
The value of a Falcon scholarship depends on the prep school. Each is a bit different and I suspect the value may vary year to year. You must research each one and of course other expenses like travel will vary based on the Falcon scholar. I do believe that NWP is the only prep school with one semester there and one semester at a local college. DS took that route, learned a lot, raised his ACT scores, and was effectively prepared for the academics of USAFA. But others here have had great experiences at other schools so doing the research is key.
 
Question for NWP alumni: Do you need to prep for SAT/ACT prior to going? What does NWP do to help you improve your scores?

I went to NWP with a 30 super-score (29 math) on the ACT and never had taken the SAT.

I left NWP with a 33 super-score (36 math) and a 1390 SAT.

The Durbecks do an excellent job with standardized test prep.

They know what they are doing and what they do works... everyone improves.

Hey Ptsv, I went to NWP this past semester and started with a 29 ACT super score and had never taken the SAT.
NWP is very good about getting you to increase your test scores because they start with the basics in all their subjects and gradually move on to more difficult topics. We went far more in depth with each topic than in high school and this allowed us to fully grasp and understand what we were learning.
Additionally, we took some practice ACT’s and SAT’s throughout the semester to show how the things we were learning would help us on the tests.
By the time I left NWP I had increased my scores to a 34 ACT super score and a 1450 SAT. The Durbeck’s really do know what they are doing and choosing to attending NWP was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Anyone who is given this chance should most definitely take it because you will not regret it.

No need to prep SAT/ACT before going to NWP. They will run you through a very systematic program. NWP is at altitude, so physical conditioning over the summer would be helpful and advised.

I know this is a late reply but...
tuition/room/board at NWP is $12-13,000 for the semester
Falcon Scholarship covers about $4,000 and NWP covers another portion
by the end of it, I'm paying around $700 out of pocket, not including clothing, toiletries, etc.
Scholarship and tuition amounts vary every year for every prep school
NWP is one semester prep and then one semester at a community college or University

That's really helpful. I think that was one of the keys that was hardest on my DS' applications: 1210 SAT Superscore
