Greetings!
I am interested in hearing from others who have accepted (or kids have accepted) a Falcon Scholarship for Next year (Falcon Class of 20-21). My son made the decision to accept the Falcon Scholarship and is currently applying to Randolph-Macon. I would love any feedback.

My DD accepted a Falcon scholarship as well & is applying to Northwestern. I think she was a little disappointed at first, but as the last few days have passed & with everything else going on in the world, I think she’s really starting to get excited! I think she also realizes that this will make her transition to the Academy so much easier. Congratulations to your son!

feelings similar here. what made her chose Northwestern ? I feel like everything happened so fast with offer and acceptance.

Congratulations, my DD was offered FS on 3/10 . She accepted and has chosen NMMI. I think it is a blessing for her with what is going on now with the virus. Our kids are losing there senior year. Still taking AP classes online, but not the same.

I have friends and fellow classmates who attended all of those schools. They were amazing Midshipmen and officers. They were well prepared for the SA life and academics. I think you will all find this is an amazing opportunity for your kids and in the end it will be a year you can’t imagine not having. Congrats and good luck!

I have a friend who went to Northwestern before USAFA & he’s been an invaluable help through this whole process. So of course he suggested NW & so far he hasn’t steered us wrong! They all look like amazing schools though...not sure that there’s a “bad” choice.

I also was accepted to the FS and I'm looking at Randolph Macon as well!

NorthWestern hasn't responded to my email yet, maybe you can help me. NW looks like it only offers school for 1 semester- where do the cadets go for the second semester? A community college?

Here is the best email and phone number to use for contact:

Email: nwprep@mac.com
Phone: 805-403-8686

I recommend calling.

I would call. Yes, NW is only for the fall semester & then 4 classes at your choice of unversity/jr. college, etc.

DD was considering RMA at first...can hardly find info on old threads about the FS program other than it's an intimate group. We are in CA and our concerns of NWP are that it doesnt offer an accredited curriculum, it is only one semester, and focus is on standardized test results. I can be wrong but just what I can gather on what is available online. GMI, MMI, NMMI offer the regimental experience we think she needs for the prep year before 4 yrs @USAFA. GMI was just added last February as a prep and thus there arent any theads at all here. Does anyone have any intel on logistics, FS class size, reviews?

I'm not really sure where the impression that NWP is an ACT/SAT mill came from. It's not. There is actually very little official SAT/ACT prep. Rather, NWP's curriculum emphasizes a return to fundamentals. The SAs are quite vocal in saying a strong foundation in algebra is far more important than 1 year of calculus, so NWP allows candidates to truly master math, chemistry, physics, and english without feeling the need to "race" to the next highest course in the subject. This is a large part of why NWP students usually raise their scores on ACT/SAT a significant amount. They learn the content until they can do it in their sleep. I guess all I can say is there's a reason two-thirds of Falcons choose NWP as their prep school: the program is extremely effective.

Thanks. We believe an extra year of fundamentals could benefit DD. Is there a summary of an agenda that you can share? How much PT? Are FSs allowed to leave the campus? Weekends? Holidays? Also, does NWP (actually, all prep schools) provide guidance w/the second round of apps, nom? Apologies for all the questions but based on your handle, you have gone through this process.

In terms of agenda, mornings start officially at 07:00 with dorm inspections, but most wake up at least 30 minutes early to prepare. Breakfast and vocab quiz come next, and the rest of the morning is usually filled with classes. PT is 75 minutes long but many do supplemental PT on their own during free time to target specific goals. Afternoon is usually more classes with dinner and study hall closing out the evening. The day officially ends 21:40 with lights out at 22:40. It's a packed schedule and you'll really learn to time manage your day.

There is limited leave from the mountain. There are church services on Sundays that anyone can attend. There are 2-3 leave weekends (after SAT/ACTs) that you can leave if you live locally. If you don't, many people who do live locally bring friends home. For those who stay, it's a much more relaxed weekend with the rec room, movies, and free time to enjoy.

Guidance: The Durbecks are always available to help with your application if you ask for it. They'll give you guidance on classes to take in the spring, will help you prepare for interviews, etc. They've been doing this for well over 20 years so they know what they're doing.

If you're interested in attending NWP, Falcon Scholar or not, I'd be happy to answer some questions! Just PM or reply to this message:) I attended NWP in the fall of 2018 and am part of USAFA's c/o 2023.
I have friends at the other SA's that could give insight to those as well if you're reapplying to them all :)

My DD was offered a Falcon Scholar for the Fall of 2019 and will be joining the c/o 2024. I feel all of the schools are great choices but each offer a different experience. She went to NWP for several reason. One of the reasons for her to choose NWP was that it was one semester. She felt that by going to NWP for one semester then to a traditional college the next semester would help broaden her academics and have one semester of life experiences at a traditional college. She is doing really well academically this semester at a four year college and will be much better prepared for the many challenges of the AF Academy. Mach01 summary is very good.

NWP is very regimented.
