Just a heads up to anyone accepting a Falcon Scholarship. If you do not receive a NEW nomination- you will NOT receive an appointment. DS is the top of his class at sponsored prep - maxed CFA - did not get new nomination (had one last year) and is the only one in has class without an appointment. We had to pay 1/3 of the tuition and there are no transferrable college credits to redeem. DS is heart broken and has no back up plan in place as we felt this was a solid path. Just know it’s a risk you accept when you take the scholarship.

@mama mia I am really sorry to hear about this, it is hard to see someone so deserving of an appointment not receive one. Have you tried contacting admissions or MOC nomination staffers? It is weird that he didn’t get a nomination after getting one last year. Maybe something went wrong, but it cannot hurt to contact someone.

That is absolutely horrible mama mia, Your poor child! I cannot imagine the disappointment your family feels. I would be entirely outraged at my elected leaders, can't believe they could give him one nomination! Grrrr

If his portal still says "candidate," then there's still a chance he may get a Superintendent or VP nomination. Where did he go to prep school? From all indications, do you think he received a strong letter of rec from the prep school?

Mama Mia, did he get an interview with the MOC panel last Fall after submitting his nomination packet again for this year? My DS did his MOC interview, by phone, while at MMI. They totally understood that since he was on the Falcon Scholarship that he could not physically appear for the interview the 2nd year. Just wondering how the whole application process went for your son the 2nd time through.

That seems so unfair. Head up, high, chest out, far! Keep moving.

I’m sorry this happened, what a blow. Was it your DS decision to accept the falcon scholarship? The SA makes it clear that it’s not a guarantee. He’s an excellent student obviously and hopefully he has started to plan. If he hasn’t heard anything then counting him out may not be wise. I hope and pray things turn around and we hear great news wherever he may go as he sounds like a stellar young man and will be a success!!!! All the best!!

academy can “find” nominations. Are you sure he was fully qualified with grades at prep school? Any new medical DQ? Any trouble with police or behavior at prep school? Honor violations? Was CFA passed again? Call admissions and ask if he qualifies for VP or superintendent nominations. Ask for help securing nominations. Do you have proof to show the academy he RE-applied for a nomination to all possible nomination sources? Have you been actively communicating with admissions officer since the nomination deadline of Jan 31? Prepare your notes and press forward asking for help from admissions. Good luck

He maxed out the CFA, top of the class academically, no medical issues, increased his SAT score, no honor violations. He has an LOA saying he needs a nomination.

Yes, he interviewed with the MOC and 2 Senators. Two were over the phone and one was a video conference.

I like to say stay positive until you hear otherwise. Although, this is one of those situations where I would encourage you all to also be proactive and describe your situation to as high a person in the leadership as possible. As long as you are polite and respectful, I don't see how it could do harm. It could be one of those rare instances where something slipped through the cracks so to speak.

Thanks to all for the advice - will stay positive - will head to his prep graduation and re-set the plans. Maybe enlistment or college. He will not go through this a third time. Congrats to everyone who made it - you deserve it and worked so hard! Going off the forum now to re-focus.

Mama,

Do you have a TWE? If not, you are still in the game!

I highly recommend you put a call in. This is not over for your DS and he can still be given a superintendent nomination. While we are on the subject some with a TWE will be appointed before IDAY as some who accepted their appointments change their minds or get injured. I know someone here at USAFA who received an appointment the Monday before IDAY after getting a portal denial. Hang-in there. It's not over until IDAY.

I agree a phone call is in order - 719-333-4096 is the phone number listed on the Falcon Foundation website. The Falcon Foundation has paid for your DS to attend a prep school and has a vested interest in him getting an appointment. I would call TOMORROW! Also, unless there is a reason (poor performance during the prep year in academics, behavior, etc.) for not receiving an appointment - but either way, your DS should be getting an answer. Also, the contact at the prep school should know what is going on. Good luck!
