Good Morning! This may not be the correct place to post so let me know if there is another place, but I am looking for broad based advice and help with regard to Falcon Scholarships. My DD got a Falcon Scholarship today. I have been reading and learning more about FS, but we still don't know that much. She has an ROTC scholarship as Plan B so we know that will get her to her goal of graduating as an officer and serving our country. Her dream has been to be an officer via USAFA. She is grateful for her ROTC opportunity. Specific questions: I am reading that FS is a semester only? Can she to to the university she planned on going to once that semester is done? Who pays for that second semester and what does that look like with regard to military regiment. I have the impression that this is a better route for reapplication to USAFA than ROTC? Any other advice, processes, knowledge, wisdom about whether she take this offer or sticks to her ROTC plan. Advice from anyone who has gone through FS and where they went too. Thanks all!!!

You are at the right place, this forum has a lot of information. Just do a search for Falcon Scholarship. And congratulations on DD getting the "golden ticket ".

MuthaRunner:

There is a Service Academy Prep section to the forum - you might find a lot more information in that section if you were to search some of the advice and comments already contributed.

I have seen many of these posts and there is varying advice that you can take based on your DD's goals. From what you present above, it sounds like her 'dream' was to become an officer in the USAF through the USAFA program. Although nothing has a 100% guarantee; being offered a Falcon Scholarship means that the USAFA saw potential and has a high desire to see your DD attend their program in the Class of 2025. It has been stated that the USAFAPS and Falcon Scholarship is like getting a 'Golden Ticket' to the next class assuming your candidate meets all the requirements of the Falcon Scholarship program. That said, it is truly up to your daughter as the ROTC scholarship will provide the same end goal - being commissioned into the USAF as an officer.

Best of look - check out the other forum threads... and as a parent of a USAFAPS Class of 2021 appointee... I hope our kids are celebrating together next year as appointees of the Class of 2025!

Thank you! I tried looking on the Service Academy Forums, but didn't really see all of this addressed. I will cross post there :). It would have been an easier decision for her if she had gotten a USAFAPS offer as we live in Colorado, and she is very familiar with the Prep School. Still very grateful for the FS offer :).

Your time and thoughts are much appreciated, and yes hoping for celebration for appointee Class of 2025!

Thanks Golden-Tic Dad! I tried to search Falcon Scholarship, and didn't get any results. Must be doing something wrong. I will try again, and thanks for the congrats :).

Your DD should start her research at the link below, which also provides an additional link.

Many do not realize the civil prep scholarships are funded and administered by the SA Alumni Assn, which is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit. They work closely with Admissions, who develops the list of candidates for prep scholarship offers.

There will be partner schools listed where the scholarship can be used. Those schools’ websites will likely have info on their SA prep programs, as well as POCs your daughter can research and contact. Some are one semester, some are two, some are military, some offer college credit.

Also try searching using google. It seems much better than using the built in SAF forum search function. Try including SAF or Service Academy forum in with your search terms like "Falcon Scholarship" service academy forum

Very helpful - thank you much!

Muthrunner, my daughter received and chosed the Falcon Scholarship last year and now is will be joining the USAFA 2024 class. Her situation was very similar to yours such that she had received the type 1 ROTC scholarship and needed to make choice on what path she wanted to choose. We live in a state near yours also. Regarding funding the Falcon Scholarship really is more of a fix amount that will be granted to your DD to be applied to the school she chooses. You will be responsible for the cost difference. For my daughter she had a choice of 5 schools with 4 of them year long programs and one was one semester with the second semester the student attends a college/juniour college of your choice at your expense. If you want to IM me I may be able to give you some insight to our experience which has been very good.

My DD received a Falcon Scholarship as well and will be attending NW Prep in the fall, which is the only one that is just one semester. Luckily we live in Florida and she received Bright Futures which will cover full tuition at a state school in the Spring for the four classes that will be required. We have a good friend that has helped us through this whole process and he went to NWP and wholeheartedly encouraged her to as well! Not that the other's aren't great options, but at least we aren't going in blind.

I would suggest to call each one and ask questions and then see how she feels. There are lots of youtube videos on each as well. Good luck on her decision and I know she'll be successful wherever she lands. If she decides on NWP, we'll see you in Sept!
