Fall Semester 2012 xROTC updates

kinnem,

AFROTC does that too, but watch out because if his unit is like our DS's was, guess what his job will be in the unit next semester? PT instructor! That is exactly what happened to our DS. He maxxed fall semester, and spring semester he was in charge of PT.

The only difference for AFROTC at our DS's was you were excused from all of them, and they allowed even C100's this option.

Thanks for the heads up Pima, but actually that's his dream job. He's been talking about wanting that slot for the past 9 months. If he could even serve as APTI he would be so excited. :thumb:

Scout, interesting to know similar things are done for AD. Having the discipline to stay in shape on your own has it's own "rewards" I guess.

DS went from APTI(C100 spring) to PTI(C200 fall) to FCC (C200 spring). Can't remember what his jobs were 300 yr., all I recall was he always had to be there by 5:30 for meetings before PFT and he had to write reports.

Yeah, that makes sense. Not sure if DS gets that although I did mention to him he would need to be at each PT if he had that job. Still, i think he would love it. He has expressed a desire to become a personal trainer whenever he leaves the service. He's also mentioned teaching middle school kids... so who knows? Frankly I think pushing the bod every day would be way easier than teaching middle school kids, but that's just me.

It sounds better in theory than in practice, honestly. Sure, you can get a max score and miss PT. Unless you're a leader (Officer, NCO, team leader). So it works well for the privates. Otherwise, you're there regardless as a leader.

Pass the APFT

Only 1 of our Scholarship freshmen contracted on Friday. The others were missing one of the requirements, mostly the APFT. It is hard to believe how unprepared some of the freshmen are.

That always amazes me. You would think these kids would be gung-ho on preparation over the summer. It's not like they don't know what's coming. :frown:

Wow!

Any thoughts on what the problem is here, Marist?

I would imagine most of those that failed thought that really high PFT score the high school coach gave them would mean they would sail right through the APFT...Surprise.

I was surprised at the amount of paperwork they had to fill out the summer before he started school. Son really had to stay on top of everything, the 104R was probably the hardest, lucky for him he had a great college advisor that helped him work it all out.

If new scholarship cadets don't stay organized and keep a good file of all the paperwork, it can easily get away from them quickly.

Most years it is the Push Up that causes failure. New cadets often do not understand the correct technique. This year it was all 3 exercises. Many of the Cadets failed 2 or all 3 exercises. Complacency appears to be a main culprit. Many of the Cadets scored well on the PFT or were multiple varsity sport athletes. Others seemed like they didn't care, as if ROTC was something Mom or Dad had forced them to do.

OK, I guess you can tolerate the poor performance (from bad coaching) on pushups. My question is what excuse do they have for the run? Last I checked, the stopwatch works the same in all time zones.

And as for the ones that didn't seem to care - Mom or Dad forced them to do it?

Next question - how did that slip through the interview?

One would hope they either learn to care, drop of their own accord, or get dropped. There's no place for complacency in xROTC in my opinion. And I agree that failing on the run makes absolutely no sense. It's not like their in a sub-tropical climate in the mid-Hudson Valley or something!

Too much of that NY Pizza during the layover in NYC.

Labor Day

DS signed contract on Labor Day! Some how without bubble wrap this actually happened - its been about 17 months since this hockey player first read that he had a 3 yr AD scholarship. This week I am hearing the Ranger Challenge tryout stories: Burpees, planks, side planks, runs, sprints, rucks, all at 5 am. Love the and if you finish before anyone else then you get to do more with those who aren't finished to encourage them on. :shake: Can only imagine what the next months hold but have to say he loves every minute. Thanks everyone for all your great information over the last couple of years.

Congrats to you and your DS paradoxer. Its great to see them love it so.

So good to hear great news!!:jump1: Congrats to the hockey player and family:biggrin:

4 of 5 freshmen at my location passed the APFT by the second attempt. The freshmen at the other BN locations were 1 for 7. Of the 5 freshman that have passed, only 2 are Scholarship Cadets. Of these 2, only 1 contracted. The other Cadet is a 3 year AD.

If the Scholarship Cadets do not contract by 15 DEC, they will lose the Scholarship.

What branch is xROTC for?

I use it as a short-hand for any ROTC... ie. AROTC, AFROTC, NROTC. I find a lot of people on the site use ROTC when they really mean AROTC which is why I do this.... I suppose though, if you don't know my code it's not too helpful.

My DS contracted with AFROTC on 23 August 2012, and today he found out via email from UK student accounts that the AFROTC paid his tuition and fees on September 5th. That was an amazing surprise because we did not expect the tuition bill to be paid until October. KUDOS to his Cadre!!!
