Today the Army officially announced that the Commandant, Brigadier General Mike Linnington, was being reassigned to critical new duties in Afghanistan. This news is the definition of bittersweet for my wife Joan and me. We know that General Linnington is needed in this crucial new position in the toughest fight our Army is facing, and we know that his leadership, dedication, and caring for Soldiers will help ensure success. That said, we will miss him and his wife Brenda tremendously. He has been an amazing Commandant, with many significant accomplishments that all helped West Point and the Corps in a relatively short time. General Linnington has been a staunch supporter of the academic program and a proponent for its key role in developing leaders – and I’ve never seen a more mutually beneficial, cooperative relationship between the offices of the Dean and the Commandant, and between us personally, in the time I’ve been at West Point. The Linningtons care deeply about cadets and it shows in everything they do. More than all that, they have become great friends of ours – trusted confidants, wonderful partners, terrific neighbors. West Point won’t be the same without Mike and Brenda Linnington, and Joan and I will miss them very much. We thank them for all they’ve done for cadets, staff and faculty, and the West Point community, but most of all for their abiding friendship.

It's been a great honor to be the 71st Commandant of Cadets these last 16 months. Cadets are awesome young Americans, staff/faculty dedicated patriots! I'm excited for an assignment to Afghanistan, and happy to be turning the reigns to BG... Bill Rapp, USMA '84. Depart these beautiful grounds on Friday. Army Strong!Read More

His replacement.

I've been following his Facebook and all the great pictures he's posted over this last year, I'll sure miss him. I wish him Godspeed.

BG Rapp is a fine officer with whom I have had a working relationship with while he was in Iraq and I at TAC. He is an EXCELLENT Leader who is a class act all around. He is a credit to West Point and will serve the institution well. ALL of you at West Point are very fortunate to have such a person coming. :thumb:

I read his bio and thought he sounded extraordinary, good to see such a fine man take over for BG Linnington.

Colonel McKearn, the Brigade Tactical Officer, has assumed the position of Acting Commadant today until BG Rapp finishes his current duties.

Today is also COL McKearn's 50th Birthday. I went to his house with my company at 5AM today, set up posters, and played rock music from outside until he came out. He broke through one of the posters we placed on his door and walked under the saber bridge we placed for him. His wife wouldn't stop offering us food. It was a good time.

My cadet told me that he was always out with the New cadets during beast-doing the rucks, making the runs, etc. I wish him well in his new assignment, which unfortunately looks to be a political hot potato.

My 4/c says one of the things that most impressed him and ultimately swayed him to choose WP was during Summer Seminar when the Commandant would be a "regular" at morning PT. Great example of leading "from the front"....also a very effective recruiting tool!

I always saw him at rucks and during PT. He wasll really involved with the Corps.

BG Linnigton also went to USMAPS this summer to work with the CC's. My son was fortunate enough to shake his hand and have his picture taken with him, made his summer go along just a little easier with that confidence. :thumb:
