February Candidate Visit Weekend

DTA is a very, quaint waterfront town. Just walk around, lots of good eats, shops, old historical buildings. Will your Mom be hanging out while you do CVW?

Well she's going to be going to any of the things available to the parents during the CVW. My aunt and uncle live about an hour away so she's commuting from there.

Son (and Husband and I) are going this Thursday to CVW...no appointment for son yet, but thinking positive....(HECK...why not??!!)

Should be fun for the candidates/informative (and fun) for parents...

As a CVW participant you will be handed off to a plebe or several plebes inside a Company. The life of a plebe is in general not a pleasant experience but this time of the year is probably the worst. There is even a name for it " The Dark Ages". The plebes have been plebes for eight months and it's a grind that has gotten old. The winter weather is gloomy and this year it's been especially bad. Each Companies training staff was re-energized in January and has upped the pace and pressure on the plebes for Pro Knowledge and passing PRT's. The topper is this week is 6 week exams so academic pressures are maxed out as well. The typical plebe is likely sleep deprived and stressed out.

As a CVW participant, in the February March visits, you may not see or hear the most positive comments about the Academy or life at the Academy. You may run into some pretty cynical midshipman. If you do, just wanted to give you a glimpse as to why.

You would think that if the Plebe's experiences are too negative toward the USNA, it could scare of potential good candidates......does the USNA do anything to ensure that a potential candidate does not get bombared with 3 days of absolute negativism from dispondent plebes?

D will be attending this weekend - has appointment. Missed out on NASS because of a broken leg so this is her first/only chance to see and experience.

osdad - you are not alone.

S will be attending in March - has appointment. Missed out on NASS because of a broken arm so this is his first/only chance to see and experience.

From what I have seen, candidates are assigned to Plebes that are succeeding. The USNA is not an easy program (it's not designed to be) and if what the Plebe has to say scares off a candidate, then maybe the USNA isn't the right fit. I would suggest though that if a Plebe does seem really negative, ask that Plebe if he or she feels they are in the right place by being at USNA and if they planning to stay.

They call it the drag draft in some companies :)... We are all told not to say things that may only be one person's view of the Academy but people still do it of course. The one thing I can recommend is talk to as many plebes and upperclass as possible and ask tons of questions! And sift through their answers. People's attitudes about the Academy are constantly changing based on classes or sports, etc. so take that into consideration!

Does anyone know if the activities for parents are wheelchair assessible? DW has a bumb knee that limits her ability to walk long distances. We're thinking of bringing Grandma's wheelchair but won't if it woul dbe too much of a PITA.

Is there a contact phone number at the Academy I can call to ask?

I'd recommend you bring it, especially if she can get in and out of it easily. There were a few times when it would be hard (another member in our group had a stroller so we watched them deal with it a few times!). Thursday night is just lectures so she probably wouldn't need it then. Friday morning is lectures until the tour, but you may park a distance from the building so it would be nice then, and you could just leave it in the hallway during the lecture. I think she'd want it during the tour, but would definitely need to get out of it to go into Bancroft. I think the chapel also. Friday afternoon the STEM tour I'm pretty sure was all on one floor but it was a LOT of walking and standing and listening so it would be great for then as well.
