How much will it cost to attend USMMA? I was under the impression it was 100% free. My son got a nomination yesterday and everything is a go with the academy but now I am thinking he may not be able to attend if I have to pay. They don't get a stipend either, right? All we know is USNA and USMA. We are new to USMMA. Thank you.

You have to buy the computer and personal items, and about $1,000 a year for haircuts/laundry/tailoring. That's about it.

No stipend, but your DS will make about $1,200 per month during the time he is at sea. The fees vary by year because of the time spent on campus versus at sea. You can see the table of fees here:
It ranges from around $2,500 for year one to about $400 during year three. First year second term has a few additional expenses that vary depending on whether your DS is a deck (~$400) or engine (~$200) major. Very little spending money is needed during the first year because time off campus is very limited. Both my DS and DD were self-supporting after year one between sea year pay and working on weekends occasionally. They are also required to provide their own insurance either from you or by purchasing a USMMA policy which was about $1,600 this year. Financial aid is available. The little known plus is that, unlike the DoD academies, USMMA graduates still have their GI Bill available for graduate school or for your grandchildren. Let me know if you have other questions. Do not let the cost deter you if USMMA is really where your DS wants to go.

You can take student loans to cover those costs, and with a sea going job you can pay them off quickly. I graduated June 20th 2015 and ended up paying tax on north of 70k that year, 6 months of which I was at school. You do get a stipend while cadet shipping which is roughly 1k/month. I have a 3/M working for me who paid to go to SUNY as an out of stater, he paid out of state tuition, in New York, and has nearly all of his loans paid off in two years. Don't let the expenses hold you back, the KP education will almost instantly pay for itself.

1. We're ABLE to accrue credit immediately after we graduation, getting enough AD time to build credit is hard unless you go active duty.
2. The rules for transferring changed this year, and it is far more difficult then it once was. Something to be aware of.

Would experience parents make some comments about FAFSA as well?
I indicated all civilian plan Bs and USMMA for DD's choices, even though we aren't taking any loans.

That basically assumes you got a 3/M job straight out, which is unlikely now. I've probably paid tax on a little less than half of that so far. Probably less than active duty money when you account for benefits, etc. Everything is uncertain. 3rds (both deck and engine) are disposable, too many out there and too few spots. Working unlicensed cuts your paycheck in half.

Of course our expenses were lower back in the 70s (computer?). . but there were charges for haircuts, football tickets and other odd and ends. . . As far as spending money. . . well, having a drinking age at 21 now makes that a bit lower, but I am sure that there are still the weekend area jobs that also supply some folding money. . . I am guessing my old trick of typing others' term papers and such isn't viable any longer what with the digital age. . but typing was a pretty good skill to make beer money back in the day. . . .

The GI bill is available for DoD academy grads, they just have to fulfill the time in service requirements after their payback years. I believe it's 3 years active duty to qualify for 100% of the GI bill, so someone with a 5 year service requirement can receive the GI bill after 8 years active.

To help cover expenses, fill out FAFSA and apply for any VA educational assistance you may be eligible for, along with local scholarships. They can all be used to offset the costs of attendance. If eligible the Pell Grant alone can cover up to $6100.00 of the annual cost of $7020.00. VA GI Bill or VA Dependents Educational Assistance is available to sons and daughters of vets if available. Plus any earned local scholarships can be transferred into the students account. You can use Federal Student Loans to cover any shortage and or your Sea Year Pay.

Typing others term papers sounds like a good idea till it gets returned with a big fat F on it. Been there, done that.

Never had the issue. . . of course I just typed, and on a mechanical typewriter. Not everybody had one. . . .
. I wasn't responsible for content. And it was tough for me not to edit. . . .

Thank you everyone for their input and help understanding the USMMA. I did not know they had the opportunity to get weekends jobs. We will be contacting the final aid office tomorrow. Specially since my DS got both his nomination and appointment letters today. Thank you!

Weekend jobs are available after recognition which will be late in plebe year, sometime in the spring. Until then, consider getting paid to stand extra watches. The going rate is currently around $20.
