After struggling with my decision for weeks, I made my decision today. I'm going to the Virginia Military Institute on my NROTC scholarship.

I have to admit, that when I started applying to colleges, I was thinking that if I got accepted to VMI, I would go. But I also applied to all the other senior military colleges and Embry-Riddle. And when I got accepted to all of them, they all started looking great to me. The choice no longer seemed so obvious when I started thinking about it with my head. The only one I could drop was NGCSU, and that is because they didn't offer NROTC, only AROTC (NGCSU was sort of my safety school). I had some great choices- besides VMI, I had the Citadel, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Norwich, and Embry-Riddle. Each college had a ton of positives to them. For some wierd reason, one of them even thought enough of me to offer me a full-ride (Citadel) from the very beginning. And after I got my NROTC scholarship, 3 more of them offered me enough to cover room & board and fees not covered by the NROTC scholarship. So I really felt blessed in all my choices. The financial offers from all the schools and my NROTC scholarship really made it possible for me to not think about the costs at all. Even at Embry-Riddle where the costs for a degree in flight might run $49K/yr, I would only have had to come up with about $1000 myself. But this only made the process harder for me. Because each school just had its own set of different positives (and always a few negatives). I just could not decide on a clear winner. I keep promising my parents I would decide in the next few days, and I just couldn't. They all seemed so great for their own reasons, I almost wish I could go to all of them. LOL. I had almost all of the schools calling me nightly, including tonight- and it got so that i almost felt like a professional athlete or something with all these schools courting me. But in the end, I had to just listen to my heart on this since my head was struggling too much comparing pros and cons of these schools- and to my heart, VMI just seems right to me somehow.

I know it will be tough. But I am really looking forward to being a cadet and middie at VMI. Go Keydets!

During this process, many of you were very generous to me with your advice for me, and i appreciate it so much. THANK YOU ALL!!! :thumb:

Congratulations!:thumb:
I look forward to seeing you at Parents Weekend! I expect to hear you ring out both of these below with gusto!!!

"VMI Spirit"

Oh, Clear the way, VMI is out today,
We're here to win this game;
Our team will bring us fame,
In Alma Mater's name.
For though the odds be against us we'll not care.
You'll see us fight the same,
Always the same old Spirit,
And we'll triumph once again;
And though defeat seems certain, it's the same with VMI.
Our battle cry is Never Never Die.

Chorus:
For when our line starts to weaken, our backs fail to gain,
Our ends are so crippled, to win seems in vain;
The Corps roots the loudest, we'll yet win the day,
The team it will rally and fight -- fight -- fight! RAY!
We'll gain through the line and we'll circle the end,
Old Red White and Yellow will triumph again;
The Keydets will fight 'em and never say die,
That's the Spirit of VMI

"Old Yell"
LETS GO!
RAH VIRGINIA MIL! RAH RAH RAH!
RAH RAH VMI WHOLE DAMN TEAM!!

Congratulations! I thought about VMI/Citadel/Texas A&M, but I figured I wouldn't be as enthusiastic about their traditions because I'm so far away from the South (Maine). Heh.

I had a choice between 3 schools, but Norwich was the one that called me multiple times a week to check in on my college decisions. I figured that if they wanted me that badly, I'd head there (plus the small student body, short distance from home, and full scholarship were all good perks).

VMI is a great school with a long and honorable history.

Congrats! :beer1:

VMI, Congrats !!!

Isn't it funny how as soon as schools with ROTC realize that you have a scholarship they start recruiting you. :shake: DS has gotten so many emails from schools he never even applied to stating that come on over, don't worry about admissions we'll get you in...some of them very comp...Texas A&M, Baylor, NCSU, UNC Chapel Hill...heck had I known that I wouldn't have wasted our time or money by sending in apps:eek::shake:

just happened to me again today with texas a&m- i did apply but got waitlisted, but after i got my nrotc scholarship, they told me they would "solve that problem" if i took the scholarship to TAMU. i didn't get back to them on that even though they called me and sent me several emails, and today, they send me an acceptance letter anyways. well, it's may 10th- a little late. LOL. anyways, i'm perfectly happy with my choice of VMI, so some other lucky waitlister will be able to take my spot at TAMU I guess! :shake: well at least now i can remember that i applied to all six of the senior military colleges and got accepted to all of the (eventually), for whatever that means ... haha.

Congrats!

Like I said it is funny, for our DS he was getting acceptances from schools he never applied to! Lesson learned apply for a military scholarship and then your top schools, b/c once you accept the scholarship it seems like every college comes out of the woodwork to get you to sign.:shake:
I must admit I feel bad for the kids who had to fill out 8-10 apps and pay the fee. It also makes me question the system that very notable colleges have personally contacted our son and were willing to waive the admission process (as late as April)if he wanted to go there on an ROTC scholarship:eek:

BTW he has never ever re-thought his decision for a second, he loves the fact that he is in a scholars program where he can summer intern in DC or at the UN and the detachment since it is a very large AF det...and of course his Dad went there also...male bonding go figure :rolleyes:
