Finally met 2 legends from SAF

Wow how fantastic to know that there are actual people behind these posts. For sometime I thought that @MullenLE was most likely AI driven due to his constant and ever presence wealth of knowledge and sage advice.

I believe that if SAF existed 30ish years ago (cough/choke) when I was attempting to secure appointment to WP or gain AROTC scholarship, @MullenLE could have guided me through the DODMERB choke point that I found myself in. Alas it was not to be and now I live vicariously through DS at USNA.

My dream one day is to meet at least one or two SAFer's in a chance encounter around DTA or the Yard.

This thread is awesome. @Skipper07 I too, chortled (+5 points for word choice).

Several people on this thread have become friends and mentors and I am very grateful for that.
I will be writing SABF on the back of my hand next week in the hopes that I run into some famed SAF members while on the Yard and at the game.

And, in honor of Mr. Mullen, some wise words from Yoda himself.

"Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.” — Yoda

This would be great advice for parents.

Curious to know whether or not an annual conference for SAF has ever been considered? This two-day symposium could feature such topics as:

1) Student Resume review
2) Mock ALO/BGO/RC interview
3) Mock nomination interview
4) The inside dirt on life inside the walls from people who have been there
5) Secrets to Success
6) Decoding Dodmerb
7) I'm New - TELL ME EVERYTHING (a process overview)
8) SAF FAQ - an assortment of top recurring questions
9) Planning for Plan B
10) Fortune Teller Alley (aka. Chance Me)

Just a thought.... I think plenty of candidates would join in person or virtually, and there would be plenty of volunteers to lead content segments.

I think he did talk to @txfwindian, but he only said "MOM/DAD: Google "DoDMERB;" Hit "Questions on the process;" Read paragraph #4."

I volunteer to staff the Bacon Booth in the sponsorship area, even virtually.

To @MullenLE credit, he is the same in real life and as he is virtually or in his yoda avatar. I told my DW that he is going to start is speech thanking parents and then telling them to get lost and let him talk to applicants. That's exactly what he did. He was gracious enough to answer everyone's question and to their satisfaction.

On a side note, I loved his comment that I married up ;)., made my day and DW was blushing.

I suspect he is the guy who can go on a stage and know everything.

I love this idea. Count me in. I can man the parental experience while DS applies for and attends SA during a pandemic.
I might need a break to head over to the bacon booth with a stop by the cocktail thread.

Kudos to @shiner for volunteering to helm the inaugural SAF Convention. Where would we be without volunteers? 😁

Some ideas for breakout sessions:

1) Responding to “Chance Me” Posts — Will cover ways to respond tactfully and patiently for the 1,000,000th time that no one here can chance you with any degree of accuracy. Learn at least 10 stock phrases that you can copy-and-paste. 🎯

2) Advising How to Max the Basketball Throw — Will provide numerous resources (some validated techniques, some purely legend, some Stu-isms) that can be shared with candidates seeking that elusive edge for launching a basketball. 🏀

3) Bacon Recipe Exchange — Come swap your favorite bacon-centric recipes. Guaranteed to leave this session with at least 10 recipes each for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and midnight munchies. Hosted by Chef @Capt MJ and SABF Founder @THParent. 🥓

SAF was actually "at" the service academy event - there was a stack of SAF business cards next to the program flyers!

It was wonderful to meet @txfwindian in person - like we were old friends! I appreciate he and his lovely bride stopped by the USAFA table even though his DD is at USNA! I had a great time meeting prospective candidates. They asked for 2 parent volunteers to assist the ALO.

SAF Convention: Is there going to be Spiritwear? I'd like to preorder a SAF zip up fleece jacket, unisex M with the bacon logo, a performance wear women's v-neck in L, and a baseball cap for DH.

Can we have an Off-Topic Silent Nerf Gun Battle Space, for people to safely duke it out and work out all their snark-nado energy? Anyone who actually talks or wears clothing with messaging would have to go sit in the Tibetan Penalty Box and listen to Bobby, who apparently lives there no with no exit visa.
[Apologies to any new members who find this stupefyingly obscure.]
