Finances

The net pay is higher in December because the cadets are reimbursed their BAS for Thanksgiving leave. It will be even higher in January because they will get the BAS for Holiday leave. And, even though I am the one feeding my cadet during those leave periods, I can tell you that I have never had any of that extra money passed on to me!

If you want to have a really good idea of what cadets get each month, here is the best information I can provide.

http://www.usafapcenc.org/documents/Budgets_2010-2013.pdf

These budgets were done last year, so the class of 2013 would have been the 4 dig class. So the budget for 2014 would be the same or similar to 2013 budget last year.

As to increasing for xmas. Highly doubtful. Besides, November net pay is only $169.67 and December net pay is $444.47. But that higher December pay doesn't get deposited until well after Christmas.

Thank you Stealth_81 & Bandit for the clarification. A Christmas increase because the cadets needed more to buy XMAS presents just didn't seem likely to me.

It seems like I heard that the greater amount in the pay check was to cover book expenses as they are buying their own books this semester

I believe the higher amount in pay helped with the books, but really it isn't an increase for the books. It was just less deductions taken in December and January, with the increase coming from the per diem they get for being away from the Academy and supposedly buying their own meals.

By law, monthly gross pay is the same for all 4 military academies - $974.40 (2011).

TITLE 37 > CHAPTER 3 > § 203 (c)

A cadet at the United States Military Academy, the United States Air Force Academy, or the Coast Guard Academy,
or a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy, is entitled to monthly cadet pay, or midshipman pay, at the
monthly rate equal to 35 percent of the basic pay of a commissioned officer in the pay grade O–1 with less than two
years of service.

Yes, I understand all that, I was referring to the Net pay. I was surprised at how high the net pay goes for the 4deg with all the deductions. When I was a 4deg, net pay didn't waiver, we got a flat $60 per month regardless,(similiar to current Plebes at USNA getting a flat $100 regardless.) Another perk of being an upperclassman, couldn't wait for that paycheck to increase.

This was a change put in a couple years ago. When my DS started in 2007, he got a flat $115 a month until his loan was paid off.
