Fire near Colorado Springs

CST?

Anyone know how this is affecting CST? Are they in the woods?

It is raining in Longmont and it looks like it may be raining on Boulder, hopefully it will work its way down to the Springs.

Subject: Wildfire Update

At this time, cadet in-processing is still scheduled for Thursday at the Cadet Field House. The cadet area is currently unaffected by the Waldo Canyon Fire. No cadets have been evacuated. The conditions in the cadet area are considered the safest on the Academy, and allow for regular academic and administration activity.

For updates, go to www.usafa.af.mil/news/fire.asp or call the Straight Talk Line at 719-333-7876.

We arrived here yesterday and are staying at the Hampton Inn near the north gate east of I-25. My brother was at the Hampton Inn near the south gate on Commerce drive and was evacuated last night. We could see the fires burning throughout the night from our window. Right now its so smoky that you can't even see to I-25 let alone the mountains. Earlier today you could clearly see the cadet area from the front of the hotel. You can smell the smoke in the hotel hallway. Had a little bit of rain earlier today but nothing to speak of. I guess 2016 will be the only class that didn't get the bus ride from Doolittle. Stay safe.

C1C son says they are letting airmanship programs sign out and leave tonight until they can get up running again (USAFA airfield is being used for firefighting aircraft). He is in Powered Flight but I assume this includes Jump and Soar training programs also. He is headed to a cadet family's house that lives in COS off Powers Rd. that is east of I-25.

can we drive cadet on base?

This is probably a dumb question but.....
We know DS has to go to the Cadet Field House for in-processing, however the USAFA grounds are closed to visitors due to fire. Will we able to drive him to the field house? Or do we need to put him on one of the buses picking up basics from one of the local hotels?

I heard CST was cancelled for budget reasons this year and going forward indefinitely. Class of 2014 might turn out to be the last class subject to the week in the woods, escape and evasion etc. (I'm told the classroom element of CST was rolled into Global Engagement).

FYI- DS just texted...cadets thats taking courses etc...are evac to UCCS dorms and will be taking classes in uniform until cleared to go back to USAFA...

Even if the base is closed to visitors, you should be able to get on. Just remember to bring your paperwork. I remember I-day and I went through south gate and they just asked for ID and my paperwork. They know you are coming for I-day.

Re post above. Do not try to enter the Academy through South Gate -- those rules have changed over the past year -- even if people were allowed to enter through South Gate in the past. I believe that all reporting Basics are supposed to enter through North Gate. Follow what has been posted, mailed to you.

They weren't "evacuated" for danger reasons -- it was to lesson the footprint at the academy of cadets in airmanship programs (gliders, powered flight, jump) who have nothing to do while the airfield is closed except for fire fighting purposes.

Those cadets in academics "deployed" to UCCS to dorms & classrooms there - I think just through the weekend.

The Air Force Academy is open for the Class of 2016 in-processing and cadet activities. Appointees should report at their previously scheduled report time. The reporting location has changed to the Cadet Field House instead of Doolittle Hall. All appointees should enter the Academy through the North Gate to access the Cadet Field House.

Mission-essential personnel and all those supporting in-processing should report for duty as scheduled. All other base operations are closed.

Curiosity, how will they do BCT if the air quality is so poor?

Curiosity, how will they do BCT if the air quality is so poor?

From what I know, they didn't move us because of air quality, but rather we were excess to the requirement and they just wanted to have less cadets on the academy in case something were to happen. I am in airmanship and the air field is being used so there was no amount of training we could do. The only time the air was really bad was on Tuesday. There is a lot of BCT that can be done inside if the winds kick up in the afternoon and cause havoc. The basics are their focus right now, so I really doubt anything would slip through in their planning.
