DS is going to CIET and is noncontracted, but he needs to get boots. Was looking at Garmont T8 NFS but boots won't be here until June/July so too late. And I thought Coyote Brown was the new AR 670 color, but DS is saying Desert Sand. So do we just go for a decent boot that is Desert Tan and then in two years get new boots? And I did a search of favorite boots but maybe I am blind and really didn't see a preference. Danner? Rocky?

Ask the civilian that runs supply. They should be issuing him boots if he is going to CIET. Message Clarksonarmy - he would know for sure. Your DS is saying Desert Sand because he was likely issued the ACU in digital that will be obsolete as of FY19.

You'll need to have them get new boots in two years anyways.
Desert is the way to go for now because we will be wearing ACU for CIET.
As for what boots.... I don't have the Nike boots but I've heard fantastic things about them. Especially for long periods of standing around (cough CIET cough). Personally I love the Oakley ones, make sure you look at the 670-1 compliant ones.

Why didn't he get issued the boots he needs? No Cadet should have to buy uniforms or equipment. ACUs/desert sand is what they are wearing at camp this year. Recommend you get something soon, so they can get broken in. Modern boots don't need as much, but it can't hurt and he doesn't want to find out at camp that they screw up his feet.

Is the difference in color between Coyote and desert really that noticeable? I know in Air Force land, there's all sorts of different shades of "green" boots, and no one really seems to care.

Hmm, I have learned to keep my mouth shut sometimes. My only answer to this is because he is non-contracted. From what I have read on the other thread about CIET, there are both contracted and non-contracted. It seems some programs provide equipment others do not. I do not know what the policy is for the various ROTC programs throughout the country in terms of providing equipment to non-contracted. He has a packing list, and he is telling us that at FT. Knox he will be issued ACU and therefore that is the reason for the Desert Tan vs. the new Coyote Brown. It seems from threads there are others that are confused by how some programs are run vs. others. It seems Cadet Command would make sure all programs are somewhat standard and consistent.

It's very noticeable. They sound like similar colors but look very different from each other. Same with the undershirts

Definitely go desert tan boots. You can wear the tan boots with either OCP or UCP ACU but not coyote brown with UCP.

My son is a serious rucker and does ranger challenge, ranger buddy and Bataan memorial march. his last boots were: Garmont T8 BIFIDA Boots (Desert Tan)

I was told that all non-contracted cadets would be issued the gear required that's not found on the packing list when they report for in-processing at Fort Knox

That is our understanding as well and he has the packing list. We are fortunate and went ahead and bought him a pair of Danner. Next door neighbor was in the Air Force and swears by them. Weren't sure what type of boots he would be issued and wanted to make sure the type he got he would be comfortable in. So far so good.
