What was your first reaction when your DD/DS said that he/she wants to attend one of the service academies or ROTC?

My mother who is currently a DoD civilian supports me with my decision of applying in the future to become a servicemen. On the other hand, my father who was in the Army for Military Police (PMO) made clear that I should think about joining the military again. Although he enjoyed his life in the military, he felt like he was emotionally missing a part of him due to deployment, constant PCS, losing friends, etc... I can understand where he's going, and yes, I am quite concerned with where I am going with this military career.

Is this completely normal?

When my son was a Junior and decided the USNA was his top choice for college, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. I never discouraged him, and we have had several discussions along the way to make sure this is what he still wants to do. He has had everything completed in early September. He has had his interview with his Congressman a couple weeks ago, and Senator interviews are held the first weekend in December.

I admire anyone who makes the decision to serve their country in any capacity.

Proud moment for this Mom and incredible relief when CGA became first choice over the other service academies.

Proud but worried. So many kids out there that say they are patriots, but so few who are willing to serve. But as a mother the risks are of course scary.

Not happy at all. He had better college options in our opinion, but he made an adult choice and is very happy with it. He got his first choice at Branch Night tonight and is over the moon. We are very happy for him. He and the Army are a good match.

Congrats to him! What branch?

Cyber. All the Firsties on the Cyber team got the branch (correlation, not causation). They are celebrating heavily tonight and will probably sleep well for the first time in weeks. I know we will.

1) My son wanted to attend the USNA since 7th grade, so it wasn't like he sprung it on us. Our feelings were that if he wanted to attend a top 10 school in the country AND serve as an officer?..... Momma and I were all for it.

2) VelveteenR- Service selection for mine was yesterday. He too got his first choice and advised that there would be some celebrating by the Firsties last night. I am sure class this morning is no fun ;)

Worry and the thought with DD’s introverted personality that a service academy could turn out to be a very good fit for her or a very bad one. It has been the absolute perfect fit for her. She has been happy from the minute she got there and hasn’t waivered once. I’m glad we trusted HER instincts that it would be a great fit for her.

Enormously proud watching DS mature and become well groomed. Honored to be a Dad and Parents, inspirational, grateful, stronger connection and awareness to getting involved and continuing to practice good citizenship. Looking forward to watching DS enjoy his journey at the Academy and the Navy.

When deciding where to go to college our DD never waivered but held steadfast even after the twe and prep school. She is a plebe and is exactly where she wants to be. I couldn’t be happier for her!

When DD came home & asked to go to a service academy forum being sponsored by a local MOC, DW thought she was interested in the hospitality career services field; thinking DD was interested in planning parties. Boy was she surprised when we got there!:)

Our DD knew very early on (about 14 years). She is a headstrong young lady and very focused. We were proud of her for her goals. We supported her even though we thought the odds were very long. She won ROTC scholarships and then focused on USMA. Now we have a Plebe. Our pride is immeasurable.
